Coast Guard rescues boogieboarders

A helicopter crew from the U.S. Coast Guard station in North Bend helped rescue four boogieboarders who were stranded Saturday near Newport.

According to a Coast Guard press release, two men and two women in their 20s were pulled out to sea by a riptide. They managed to paddle to the base of a cliff near Devil’s Punchbowl State Park, but 18-foot seas and 15-knot winds made it dangerous for them to get to shore.

The helicopter crew took the four people to shore, where Coast Guard members from Station Depoe Bay drove them to their vehicle. No injuries were reported.
