America is the best, but it’s exciting to consider the challenge of improvement. McCain and Palin can meet the challenge of the events of the last 10 days.

Two years ago, McCain pushed for reform of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, by sponsoring a bill to more heavily regulate them. Had it passed, it would have countered the deregulation bill signed into law in 1999 by Bill Clinton, which accelerated greed and corruption that lead to our current mess. Furthermore, the economy started its slide after 2006, when the newly elected Democrat-controlled Congress decreased oversight.

Republicans favor regulation, when it protects our economy. The record shows why the Democrats wanted this deregulation, since Obama accepted $105,849 in campaign contributions from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac compared to just $21,500 by McCain. Also, Obama appointed former Fannie Mae CEO Jim Johnson to head his vice president selection committee. Former Fannie Mae CEO Franklin Raines told the Washington Post he had advised the Obama campaign on housing and mortgage policy. Accordingly, Obama benefited 500 percent more than McCain with this deregulation.

McCain and Palin are more likely to control the quid pro quo lobbying, earmarks and pork barrel operation of our government. So vote for them and experience the excitement of participating in making a change that will improve the best country in the world.

Warren,

For you to say "Republicans favor regulation, when it protects our economy" goes totally against the GOP free market mantra. Maybe if you replace "our economy" with "their bank accounts" it would make sense.

Phil Gramm, the author of McCain's economic plan, also authored the 1999 bill that you are crediting as the cause of the problem.

Rick Davis, McCain's campaign manager, is partner in the main lobbying firm Freddie and Fannie used to stop regulation up until a month and a half ago.

I can give credit to McCain for (belatedly) signing on to support S190, which would have provided more regulation over Fannie and Freddie, but the truth is that the bill died in a Republican controlled committee, never seeing the light of day again. McCain said nothing else at the time but now acts as if he wrote that legislation and pressed hard for its passage, both of which are untrue.

Just saying...
