The Coos Bay Public Library and the League of Women Voters of Coos County are presenting a free screening of the film “Iron Jawed Angels” as an election season special showing.

The screening is scheduled at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Myrtlewood Room of the library. Coos County Clerk Terri Turi will introduce the film and be available to register voters.

The film is described as “taking a fresh and contemporary look at a pivotal event in American history,” recounting the struggle 88 years ago of those who fought for passage of the 19th Amendment that granted women the right to vote, a press release said.

“Iron Jawed Angels” is a 2004 HBO film that tells the true story of defiant and brilliant young activists Alice Paul, played by Oscar-winning actress Hilary Swank, and Lucy Barns, played by Frances O’Connor.

The two women took the women’s suffrage movement by storm, putting their lives at risk to help American women win the right to vote.
