Watershed restoration

Landowners in the areas of Daniel’s Creek, Millicoma and South Fork Coos rivers are invited to a Coffee Klatch meeting at the Coos Bay Public Library at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The Coos Watershed Association would like to meet with landowners and to include them in the watershed assessment and restoration process currently being completed for these areas, and to find out how landowners feel about potential projects in their area.

Wednesday

Drawing principles

The basic principles of drawing will be taught in a workshop led by professional artist Liv Drahos at the Coos Art Museum. The workshop will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesdays, and will run through Nov. 12. Engaging exercises will aide in rediscovering art and developing a creative voice for adults and high school students. The class fee is $65 for museum members, and $80 for non-members. Horticulture success

The North Bend Garden Club will meet at noon Wednesday at the North Bend Housing Authority, 1700 Monroe Ave. OSU Master Gardener JoAnn Conway will present “Successfully Staging Your Horticulture” as this month’s program. Native exhibits

The Bay Area hosts the statewide debut of Oregon Historical Society’s “Oregon is Indian Country” exhibit. The society developed the three-part exhibit with Oregon’s nine federally recognized tribes.

The exhibit will open Wednesday and will offer different components at the Coos Bay Public Library, the North Bend Public Library and the Coos Historical & Maritime Museum in North Bend.

“Oregon is Indian Country”  incorporates native voices, artifacts and photographs. The three are “The Land,” “Traditions That Bind” and “Federal Indian Policies.”

Noted historian and author, Dr. Stephen Dow Beckham will speak on “Oregon’s Indian Voices: 1792-2008” at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Coos Bay Public Library. From 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday the public is welcome to visit the Coos Historical & Maritime Museum to observe experts demonstrate traditional technology for cedar plank splitting, weaving and other traditional skills. Glass art

Southwestern Oregon Community College, in collaboration with the Port Orford Arts Council and Port Orford/Langlois libraries, will feature local cast glass artist Hugh McKay at the second artist lecture of the series. The event will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Port Orford Library. This lecture is free and open to the public.

Employee forum

The October WorkNet Forum will be from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. Thursday at the Red Lion, 1313 N. Bayshore Dr., Coos Bay. WorkNet is a live forum where employers share current job openings, and job seekers make a brief presentation of their job skills and work history. The forum is open to the public.

Library sale

The Douglas County headquarters library will have a fall book sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday for Friends of the Library members. The sale will continue for the public from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. All profits from the sale will be used to purchase more books and materials for the library system. The headquarters library is at 1409 NE Diamond Lake Blvd., in Roseburg. Being a princess

Coos Bay/North Bend Christian Women's Connection will host “Let’s Do Lunch” from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the Red Lion Hotel, 1313 N. Bayshore Drive, Coos Bay.  Cost is $12.

Brenda Copeland of Bastrop, La., will be the guest speaker. She will draw from her experiences as a former Miss America preliminary winner to talk about “How to be a princess and not wear the crown all day.”

Marty Giles also will present a slide show on sand.

Dynamics of violence

As part of a lecture series, Women Safety Resource Center presents “Dynamics of Domestic Violence and the Effect of DV on Children” at 6 p.m. Thursday. The featured speakers are Stephanie Jakovac and Kathryn Cummings of Child Protective Services. All community members are welcome, men and women alike. The center is  at 1681 Newmark Ave., in Coos Bay.

Afghan refugees

The “Friday Foreign Film” series at Coos Bay Public Library continues at 7 p.m. Friday. The featured film is “Baran” (2001).

This highly-acclaimed film from Iran takes a humanistic look at the heartbreaking plight illegal Afghan refugees working cheap labor on the outskirts of Tehran, a press release said.

The film tells the story of a teenage boy working on a construction site who loses his job to an illegally hired Afghani worker. The boy is forced into harder labor on the site, but a startling twist gives him a completely different view of their lives and changes his outlook on people forever.

The series is normally held on the second Friday of the month and is free to the public. Many of these films are not rated, so parental discretion is advised. For more information, call 269-1101.

Jazz Revue

Sawdust Theatre in Coquille will be presenting the Sawdust Jazz Revue at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The revue will star the Clambake Reunion Jazz Band featuring Judy Jordan, South Coast Harmony and Sawdust Theatre’s Olios and Vignette. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $12.50 and are available at Off The Record in North Bend, and at Bree’s Upscale Resale in Coquille.

Cheer clinic

Marshfield High School will be hosting a cheer clinic for grades kindergarten through sixth from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the high school’s Harding Building. The cost is $25 per student, and includes a T-shirt that they will wear for a performance during the Marshfield home football game at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17.

Registration forms are at the school office. The deadline for registration is 3 p.m. Thursday.
