Devereux tops field in Pre Run for Kids

Connor Devereux of Coos Bay took first place overall in the annual Pre Run for Kids on Sept. 21 in Coos Bay.
The Sunset Middle School eighth-grader covered the course in 18 minutes and 44 seconds, more than 90 seconds faster than runner-up Strider Myhre, a seventh-grader, who finished in 20:17. Fourth-grader Ian Emlet was third overall, in 22:10.
The top girl to finish was seventh-grader Natalie Hill, who crossed the line fourth overall in 22:42. Isabel Groth, a fifth-grader, was ninth overall and second among girls, finishing in 23:56. Larissa Schreiber edged both Darby Sutter and Tosha Smith for third overall among girls and was the top eighth-grader.
The top three finishers in each grade level received medals. Other grade champions were Brian Wicklund and Kaylee Delzotti for first grade, Grant Webster and Hannah Graber for second grade, Bradley Easton and Maddy Suppes for third grade, Hailey Finnigan for fourth-grade girls, Vincent Tine for fifth-grade boys, and Nick Hossley and Kaityln Porter for sixth grade.
A total of 131 boys and girls participated in the race, which was held under sunny skies and sponsored by the Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon.
Runners came from Coos Bay, North Bend, Myrtle Point, Coquille, Gold Beach, Bandon, Salem and West Linn.
All runners received certificates and bubble gum ChapStick.
The Boys & Girls Club extended thanks to the many volunteers, including Alex Flaherty, Jeremy Brooks, Chris Coney, Emily Nauman, Elliott Aurdahl, Hannah Francis, Daniel Hamer, Ed Gayewski, Katie Wilson, Aussie Foley, Joshua Carter, Ty Whitley, David Perrin, Stacey Smith, Tiffany Wiley, Tamara Beardlsey, Cameile Brancacio, Corey Downs, Brianna George, Ashley Shield, Tori Scott, Davey Beebe, Chloe Danielson, Trevor Miles, Jordan Miles, Derek Duenas, Erika Brown, Jessyka V-Brown, Jessica Hockema, Trevor Hockema, Sonia Amlin, Jennifer and Steve Groth, Beka Young, and others whose names were not available.
Officials also extended thanks to club staff members Angie Hill, Scott Withers, Mitch Gross, Rob Miles and Jess Alvillar, as well as the city of Coos Bay, the Coos Bay Police Department, Marshfield High School, Coos Art Museum, Columbia Distributing, BNT and Pepsi.
