Five Coquille chess players earned honors at the first-ever Oregon All Stars invitational chess tournament on Sept. 13 in Albany.

Only the players who have the 10 best ratings in the state in their grade made the list. Nine of the players invited were from Coquille.

The tournament had 60 players in attendance, and were placed in small groupings of similar ratings.

Division winners from Coquille included Jessi Ross, Seth Perkins, Josiah Perkins, Tasha Keller and Hailey Riley.

Other Coquille players to attend were Stephen Mast, Matthew Crim and Nataleena Daily.

The first-place winners of each section received a $50 gift certificate to Amazon.com.

53 y.o. former los angeles chess kid here...i remember what it was like, best of luck to the young players from coquille. i also remember that one good chess coach can really put a school on the map, a lot faster than a good football coach can.
