Churchill tops Marshfield in Midwestern League opener
Saturday, October 4, 2008 6:14 AM PDT

Marshfield gave up a 21-point first quarter on the road against Churchill Friday night, and the Pirates never recovered as the Lancers rolled to a 24-12 win in the Midwestern League opener.

The Lancers struck early and often, getting on the board first with a 4-yard scramble from quarterback Erik Knapp.

The Pirates struck next on a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown from Kyle Brown, but Churchill then finished out the first quarter with touchdown passes of 59 and 17 yards from Knapp to Sam Graham and Blake Determan.

Marshfield scored again on an 8-yard run from Brown in the second quarter, but could get no closer as the Lancers capped the game with a field goal from Alex Priaulx in the fourth quarter.

Brown had 113 yards on 20 carries for the Pirates.

Marshfield was without starting quarterback Kyle Tedder, who had to sit out after being ejected from last week’s game against Jefferson.

Churchill had 246 yards rushing against Marshfield, while the Pirates amassed 219 yards on the ground to go with 125 yards in the air.

Marshfield is up next at North Eugene Thursday night in a week shortened due to statewide teacher inservice day.
