A short-handed North Bend squad beat host Sutherlin 20-8 in the schools’ Far West League opener Friday night.

“I was proud of the kids,” said North Bend coach Rick Taylor. “They did a great job to win this game.”

After Sutherlin struck first with a safety and a 47-yard run by Brian Andry, North Bend tied the game late in the opening quarter on a 20-yard run by Jake Lucero and a conversion run by Cameron Seiger.

Dalton Iveans gave the Bulldogs the lead for good by returning an interception 54 yards for a touchdown. Cameron Seiger added an insurance score with a 7-yard run late in the fourth quarter. Cody Harden had an interception after Seiger’s touchdown to clinch the win.

Taylor said the Bulldogs responded well to Sutherlin’s touchdown in the first quarter, which came one play after linebacker Craig Banry suffered a separated shoulder for the second time this season.

“We marched the ball down and scored,” he said.

North Bend won while managing just 201 yards of offense — 176 on the ground — after posting big numbers while winning its previous four games.

The Bulldogs were missing 11 players during the game — three because of injuries and eight others because of disciplinary reasons, Taylor said, adding the team responded well in the face of adversity.

“That was a real good team effort,” he said. “I was really proud of them.”

North Bend hosts two-time defending league champion Siuslaw in the annual Miss Flame game next Friday night.

Douglas stuns Siuslaw

Five different players rushed for touchdowns — including runs of 7 and 24 yards from Sky Woods — and host Douglas blasted two-time Far West champion Siuslaw 40-14 Friday night.

The Trojans scored 20 points in the first half before running away with the game with a 20-point third quarter. Michael Ruppert broke a 65-yard touchdown run, and Bryson Norton and Paul Polamalu both had scoring runs of 1 yard.

Tim Urista also scored for Douglas on a 58-yard interception return.

Siuslaw scored on a 1-yard run from Jacob Mitchell and a 5-yard run from Matt Tholen.

Lancers top Bruins

South Umpqua used a dominant ground game to defeat visiting Brookings-Harbor 43-14 Friday.

The Lancers amassed 319 yards rushing against the Bruins, and Triton Crane ran for four touchdowns and returned an interception for a fifth in the win. South Umpqua out-gained Brookings-Harbor by a total of 414-165.

Both of the Bruins’ scores came from quarterback Dustin Paradis, who had touchdown runs of 51 and 44 yards.

Sunset Conference

Red Devils beat Braves

Joseph Harris caught two touchdown passes and returned a fumble recovery for a third score and Coquille topped Reedsport on the road in Sunset Conference play Friday night.

Red Devils quarterback Buddy Parler was 10-for-17 passing for 134 yards and two touchdowns with an interception in the win. Harris had seven of those receptions for 98 of Coquille’s 138 passing yards, but most of Coquille’s offense came from 194 yards rushing.

Reedsport struck first on the opening drive, scoring on a 3-yard touchdown scramble from Josh Palmer. But then Parlier connected on a 40-yard touchdown pass to Harris, Harris picked up a fumble and went 20 yards to paydirt and Parlier again found Harris in the end zone from 20 yards out. Coquille went into halftime up 18-8.

Reedsport scored the last touchdown of the game on a 37-yard fumble recovery from Cory Christoffersen. Reedsport managed just 117 rushing yards and 17 yards passing on the night.

Tigers edge Chieftains

Bandon scored two second-half touchdowns to beat host Rogue River 12-0 on Friday night.

Jimmy Mack returned a punt 90 yards for a score in the third quarter and Cody Carney followed a big defensive play with a 1-yard run with just 3:23 remaining for the insurance score. Just before the touchdown, Andy Santos tackled Rogue River’s punter inside the 5-yard line.

The Tigers got their first league win, and host Reedsport on Thursday night next week.

Challengers top Glide

Tailback Connor Kirkpatrick ran for two touchdowns for Cascade Christian and the Challengers racked up 429 yards rushing in a 54-6 thumping of Glide at home Friday night.

Cascade Christian went into halftime up 40-0 and Glide didn’t get on the scoreboard until a late passing touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Skyline League

Powers runs over Prospect for first win

Powers racked up 300 total yards and went up 26-0 after the first quarter en route to a 54-12 victory on the road at Prospect.

It was the first win of the season for the Cruisers in the District 2 matchup.

No other details were available Friday night.
