Coast Guard ends summer protection at GB, Bandon
Saturday, October 4, 2008 6:14 AM PDT

Boaters know that the jetties and surf near the Coquille and Rogue River jetties can be treacherous in the winter. With the change in the season, the U.S. Coast Guard also will be pulling out its search and rescue detachments until spring.

The Coast Guard is reminding commercial fishermen and recreational boaters to take extra caution on the water this winter. On Thursday, the Coast Guard shut down the detachments, which open seasonally due to increased boating traffic during the summer months and hazardous river bar conditions. The detachments will remain closed until Memorial Day.

The river entrances will not be covered by immediate emergency response, but would require response from North Bend Coast Guard rescuers.

“There won’t be any Coast Guard presence in the area,” Operations Specialist First Class Keith Showalter at the Group Air Station North Bend.

Boaters can check river bar closure information and current bar restrictions by contacting the local Coast Guard station or visiting the 13th District’s hazardous bar Web site at http://www.uscg.mil/d13/bar/default.htm.
