Tuesday

Mosaic art

A mosaic paper art class will be offered at the Coos Art Museum from noon to 3 p.m. Tuesdays through Oct. 28. Stephanie Tomlin will lead the class.

Students will learn how to create color palettes and design works of art using only cut pieces of paper. This collage-inspired class is made for beginning, intermediate and advanced students.

The workshop is open to adults and high school students.

The class fee is $65 for museum members, and $80 for non-members. For more information, call 267-4877.

Making masks

A “Getting to Know You” mask-making art class with Stephanie Tomlin, for grades two through seven, will be held from 4 to 5:15 p.m. Tuesdays and runs through Nov. 11 at the Coos Art Museum. Students will create masks while exploring themes such as culture, traditions and symbols.

The class fee is $45 for museum members and Boys & Girls Club members, and $55 for non-members.

Breezy harmonies

The Sea Breeze Harmony Chorus will begin rehearsals for their Christmas Chorus at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Coos Bay. All are welcome.

Garden talks

Weedum Seedum Garden Club will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Sprague Community Room at the Bandon Library, 1204 11th St. S.W. in City Park. Bandon resident Carolyn Goldwasser is the guest speaker. She has been active in the Gross Creek project. Lucas Gershom also will talk about wild edible plants.

Wednesday

Stiching with friends

The Coos Stitchery and Craft Club will meet at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1290 Thompson Road in Coos Bay.

The club will make a “Potato Baker/Tortilla Warmer,” so participants are asked to bring one yard of focus fabric, or a half of a yard of two complimentary fabrics, coordinating thread, a sewing machine and basic supplies. Insulating batting will be available for purchase, or sewers may bring their own.

Basic drawing

The basic principles of drawing will be taught in a workshop led by professional artist Liv Drahos at the Coos Art Museum.

The workshop will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Nov. 12. Engaging exercises will aide in rediscovering art and developing a creative voice for adults and high school students.

Staging horticulture

The North Bend Garden Club will meet at noon Wednesday at the North Bend Housing Authority, 1700 Monroe Ave. OSU Master Gardener JoAnn Conway will present “Successfully Staging Your Horticulture.”

Hitting 100

The Coquille Fire Depart-ment is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

To celebrate, Coquille Firestation No. 1 will hold its annual fire prevention open house along with its 100th celebration from 4 to 8 p.m. Wed-nesday.

Hot dogs, chips and drinks will be provided.

Rehabilitated birds

Cape Arago Audubon Society will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Milner Crest Education Center, 1255 Hem-lock Ave. The meeting will feature Jeanette Philips, who will speak about rehabilitated birds from Free Flight Bird and Marine Mammal Rehabilitation in Bandon. The public is welcome.

Upcoming

Tutors needed

The Coos County Literacy Council is short on tutors and will be recruiting volunteers to tutor individuals of all ages.

New tutor training will be held from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, and the following day from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. 

Attendance at both sessions is required to receive certification. Registration cost is $15, and scholarships are available. 

For those who are interested, call Mary at 888-4328 by Tuesday to register for training.

The program is also seeking new students.

Individuals who would like to improve their basic education skills or work toward a particular goal can sign up for tutoring by calling 888-4328.
