High School Recap: Siuslaw builds lead in FWL race

Siuslaw took a two-game lead in the Far West League, edging visiting North Bend, 24-26, 25-16, 16-25, 25-21, 19-17 in a Thursday night volleyball thriller.
“The kids played tough,” said Siuslaw coach Amy Peterson. “It was close all the way.”
In the final game, the teams traded leads several times before Siuslaw pulled it out.
The Vikings improved to 5-0, while North Bend fell to 3-2, tied with Douglas for second place.
Shelbey McClellan had 27 kills for Siuslaw and Seabre Church had 19 kills. Leigh Aurich had 40 assists and McKenzie Mumpower added 21.
Alexandra Mateski had 26 kills and 16 digs for the Bulldogs. Haley Dunham had 15 kills and 21 digs and Katie Banta had five kills and 41 assists.
The two teams had played earlier in the season and Siuslaw won relatively easily.
“They are significantly stronger (now),” Peterson said of the Bulldogs.
Sutherlin beats Bruins
Sutherlin outlasted visiting Brookings-Harbor, 19-25, 25-15, 25-22, 23-25, 15-7 on Thursday to finish the first half of the league season on a positive note.
The Bulldogs bounced back after the tough loss in the fourth game.
“They came out under fire,” coach Stacy Lefevre asid. “It was a good win for us.”
Fawna Andrews had 16 kills and two blocks for the Bulldogs. Amanda Hutchings added 12 kills, three blocks and 19 digs; and Mikayla Mendenhall had 13 kills and 18 digs. Danielle Hults had 42 assists and 20 digs.
For the Bruins, Dani Olson had 13 kills and six blocks, while Shawna Cooper had 10 kills and 16 digs and Nicole Watterson had seven kills, an ace and a block.
Trojans top Lancers
Douglas beat visiting South Umpqua 25-17, 25-21, 19-25, 25-23 on Thursday.
Courtney Bush had 19 kills and 13 digs for the Trojans, while Stacia Blankenship added 10 kills and 11 digs. Alaina Findlay had 34 assists, while Kim Mintz and Anna Pleich each had 16 digs.
“We’re still struggling with the amount of errors we make and it makes it hard for us to put people away when we should,” said Douglas coach Carl Bone. “It’s nice to be able to win and our girls never give up, but we’re letting games stay too close when we shouldn’t.”
Sunset Conference
Challengers still perfect
Cascade Christian started the second half of the season the same way the Challengers played the entire first half, with a convincing win over host Coquille, sweeping the Red Devils 25-14, 25-20, 20-10.
“This is their best team in four years,” said Coquille coach Troy Cooper. “They’re faster this year.”
Becca Sellers had 12 kills for the Challengers, Brianna Holtz had 30 assists, and Hannah Brewster had 11 digs.
Nikki Hall had 10 kills for the Red Devils. Lindsey Cooper had 18 digs and Chelsey Forbes had 19 assists
The Red Devils, alone in third place in the league standings, visit second-place Gold Beach Monday in a huge game on Monday.
Panthers top Wildcats
Gold Beach overcame a slow start to beat host Glide, 17-25, 25-18, 25-16, 25-16 on Thursday.
The Panthers improved to 7-1 on the season, good for a two-game lead over Coquille in the race for second place in the league standings.
Bobcats beat Bandon
Myrtle Point beat host Bandon 13-25, 25-22, 26-24, 25-22 on Thursday.
“It was good volleyball, and long rallies,” said Bandon coach Shani Pierce. “They just, when it came right down to it, were a wee bit smarter.”
Erin Fullerton had 12 blocks and six kills for the Bobcats. Britteny Hubbard had nine digs and two aces, and Sam Sanders had 10 assists, 13 service points and two aces.
Briana Valentine had 23 kills and 10 digs for the Tigers. Grace Garrett added 11 kills and11 digs, and Karli Crook had eight kills, two aces and five digs.
Chieftains edge Braves
Rogue River rallied for a 25-16, 23-25, 25-15, 19-25, 15-8 win over visiting Reedsport on Thursday.
Jordie Campbell had six kills and 22 digs and Sabrina Smith had six kills, 12 digs and 11 blocks for the Chieftains.
Skyline League
Camas Valley tops Pacific
Camas Valley beat host Pacific, 25-20, 25-21, 26-24 on Thursday in a match that Pacific coach Tiffany Freitag said was positive for her players.
“We’ve had some down games where we’ve lacked confidence,” she said. “Tonight they came out and it was almost like a new beginning for us. They played with heart and a lot of talk and teamwork. it was good for them.”
Devon Ashdown had two aces, seven assists, and four kills to lead the Pirates. Jesse Culley had eight kills, nine digs and two blocks; Ashley Curry had three aces, three kills, six digs and four blocks; Cassie Keeler had 16 digs and Jordan White had three aces and nine digs.
“Hopefully that’s a good sign of better things to come,” Freitag said.
BOYS SOCCER
Bruins top Cougars
Brookings-Harbor pounded visiting Illinois Valley 11-0 in a nonleague match on Thursday.
Anthony Babb had three goals, while Linden Loren and Dylan Grover had two each.
“It was a good game,” said Brookings-Harbor coach Gabriel Anaya. “I don’t think they had any shots on goal.”
