Reedsport family loses home in fire

A family is displaced, but no one was hurt in a blaze that almost destroyed an older, two-story home Saturday in Reedsport.
The fire call at 174 N. 18th St. came in to the Reedsport Volunteer Fire Department at about 3:06 a.m., according to Fire Chief Tom V. Anderson.
“A number of people were in the house,” he said. “Fortunately one of them woke up and got everybody else out of the house — even the animals.”
A spokeswoman at the Douglas County Assessor’s Office said the property owner is Richard Mooney. Anderson said the house had belonged to the same family for a long time.
“It’s not a total loss, but pretty close,” he said.
Three Reedsport fire trucks were on the scene and about 25 firefighters. Reedsport was assisted by Gardiner and Winchester Bay volunteer fire departments, each with one truck and five firefighters, and Lakeside Rural Fire Protection District with one engine and eight firefighters. Anderson said it took about 20 minutes to knock down the fire and crews remained on the scene throughout the afternoon extinguishing smaller fires.
The American Red Cross put up the family for three nights in a motel. Anderson said the state fire marshal is assisting in a routine investigation.
“It appears the cause is just bad luck,” Anderson said.
