Deadline nears for tax returns

Monday, September 29, 2008 |
Time is running out to file a tax return and receive an economic stimulus payment, but thousands of Oregonians have yet to claim their checks.
The deadline is Oct. 15.
Internal Revenue Service figures indicate that as of early September more than 64,000 eligible Oregonians still had not filed the tax return necessary for getting a check for at least $300, according to an Oregon Center for Public Policy press release.
Most of those who have not submitted a tax return, despite being eligible for a stimulus payment, have incomes so low they usually would not file. Others are seniors who have not filed for years, according to Bauer.
The OCPP has a resource Web page that lists where Oregonians throughout the state can seek help in filing a tax return. That page can be accessed at

Who has not filed
The Oregon Center for Public Policy and Center on Budget and Policy Priorities compiled a county-by-county breakdown of people eligible for economic stimulus checks who have not filed at tax return as of Sept. 7.
