Marshfield girls soccer team falls to Willamette
Saturday, September 27, 2008 12:33 AM PDT

Visiting Willamette handed the Marshfield girls soccer team a tough 6-0 loss on the Pirates’ home field on Thursday.

Trailing 2-0 at halftime, Marshfield coach Kitty DeMoss pulled goalkeeper Meagan Meader to use her skills on the field to generate more offense, but the Pirates’ defense suffered in a four-goal second half.

“We weren’t generating any kind of offense (in the first half),” said DeMoss. “We weren’t scoring, and I would rather take the risk than lose 2-0. It’s still a loss.”

The absence of starting forward Kelsey Laird, who was injured on Tuesday against Churchill, probably had something to do with the lack of scoring chances for Marshfield.

“(Laird) was such a spark plug for the offense. We really had to try and fill in the gap, and we couldn’t do it tonight,” said DeMoss after the game.

Willamette’s goals came from Laura Nelson on a penalty kick (13th minute), Carrie Bullard (36th minute), Kristin Drews (41st minute), Erika Schiller (43rd minute) Sammy Hamacher (53rd minute) Noelle Myrand (58th minute).

DeMoss said midfielder Christine Hunter, fullback Courtney Lanza and Hannah Francis had strong performances in the loss.

“It’s just really a gut check. We have to look at ourselves and where we’re going,” said DeMoss of her team that’s now 0-3 in Midwestern League play. “This game’s over, and we have to learn from it. We’ll watch the tapes and go from there.”
