NORTH BEND — City councilors are wary about an idea to put a North Bend Municipal Pool bond measure on the ballot some time next year.

The city needs to raise about $1.4 million to complete Phase 2 of the project to expand the pool building, and members of the Save Our Pool Committee believe a bond could be the solution if fundraising isn’t sufficient. The effort is being split into two pieces, with Phase 2A taking care of the lobby renovation, office space and lifeguard restrooms. That portion will be paid for by $326,000 in city funds leftover from Phase 1, and a challenge grant from the Ford Family Foundation.

Councilor Janet Rubin said she wasn’t keen on the idea of a bond considering the current economy.

City Administrator Jan Willis reminded the council that the idea is in its infancy.

Councilors gave her permission to pursue Phase 2A, and the issue will be discussed again during the Council’s January goal setting meeting. A survey to determine public interest also may be inserted into the city’s seasonal newspaper.

“This isn’t something we would want to rush into at all,” Willis said.
