Midwestern League

Marshfield Boys

Coach: Tony Preston

2007 League Record: 5-5-0

Returning Lettermen (returning starters in italics): Wes Keller, sr, defender; Tyler Leach, sr, defender/midfielder; Tyler Graves, sr, forward; Forrest Rambo, jr, defender; Angel Duarte, soph, forward.

Key Newcomers: Brian Melgar, jr, forward; Brian Gonzales, jr, midfielder; Adam Alexander, jr, midfielder; Sean Hood, jr, midfielder.

Outlook: Marshfield graduated eight seniors from last year's playoff team, so the Pirates are trying to combine many newcomers with the few returning varsity players. The team has a lot of strength in its defense, and Melgar has proven to be a dynamic scorer. Marshfield will need to put things together to make another playoff run.

Marshfield Girls

Coach: Kitty DeMoss

2007 League Record: 0-7-1

Returning Lettermen (returning starters in italics): Courtney Lanza, sr, midfielder; Catherine Bones, sr, defender; Christine Hunter, sr, midfielder; Cassie Messerle, sr, defender; Lily Duarte, sr, forward/midfielder; Mallory Crane, sr, midfielder; Kelsey Laird, sr, forward/goalkeeper; Emily Nauman, sr, midfielder/defender.

Key Newcomers: Megan Meador, jr, goalkeeper; Hannah Francis, jr, midfielder; Josie Berger, fr, forward.

Outlook: After two years building Marshfield's program, DeMoss finally has a veteran squad to work with. Newcomers Francis and Meador, an all-league goalkeeper the past two years in the Far West League, add two more key elements to what should be the Pirates' best season in recent years.

Far West League

Coquille Boys

Coach: Randy Lucas

2007 League Record: 0-12-0

Returning Lettermen (returning starters in italics): Blake Holmes, jr; German Ferrer, sr; Colby Gederos, soph; Luke Hashberger, sr; Jeff Veysey, jr; Alex Ford, sr; Martin Gonzales, sr.

Key Newcomers: Mauro Sakuma, sr; Ryan Dannels, jr; Armando "Tito" Rangel, jr; Cole Waddington, fr; Nate Slater, fr; Andreas Esparza, fr.

Outlook: Coquille has found a strong offense early in the season behind Dannels, a dynamic scorer, and also Sakuma. Four different players scored in the team's win over Douglas last week. The team has held steady as Veysey has finished recovering from injury after being the goalie the past two years.

Coquille Girls

Coach: Mark Usselman

2007 League Record: 5-6-3

Returning Lettermen (returning starters in italics): Brittany Love, sr, goalkeeper/midfielder; Haley Stephens, jr, forward; Megan Sullivan, soph, fullback; Cheyenne Sherbondy, sr, midfielder/forward; Gabby LaFranchi, jr, midfielder; Joelle Wheeler, soph, goalkeeper/midfielder.

Key Newcomers: Mia Toskala, sr, forward; Chantri Stump, jr, midfielder; Christie Andy, soph, fullback; Staci Daniel, soph, midfielder/fullback; Bailey Richardson, fr, midfielder; Katy Cornell, fr, midfielder/forward; Julianne Owens, fr, fullback.

Outlook: Coquille is in a rebuilding year after its best season in school history. Many of the newcomers are in starting roles, and though the players are working hard, the team likely will struggle early in the season.

North Bend Boys

Coach: Blaine Deming

2007 League Record: 6-5-1

Returning Lettermen: Sean Jany, sr, forward/halfback; William Fowler, sr, fullback; Andy Langenstein, sr, sweeper; Jake Schneider, sr, midfielder; Jeramy Dubisar, jr, forward; Kyle Deming, jr, midfielder; Billy Rempelos, soph, wing; Chase Scott, soph, defender.

Outlook: After missing the playoffs for the first time since dropping down to the Far West League last year, North Bend has a strong team this year, evident by the team's 3-0 start in league play. Teamwork will be the most important element for the Bulldogs to continue on the playoff course.

North Bend Girls

Coach: Dustin Hood

2007 League Record: 0-14-0

Returning Lettermen (returning starters in italics): Taylor Cribbins, soph, halfback; Nicole Medford, soph, striker; Alyssa Birrer, soph, fullback; Kyla Feaster, soph, halfback; Anna Houghton, soph, goalkeeper; Dana Crosby, jr, halfback; Amelia Liggett, jr, sweeper; Lisa Wiggins, jr, fullback.

Key Newcomers: Sammie Clark, jr, defender; Caitlin McCullough, fr, defender; Brooke Davison, jr, forward.

Outlook: After a year without any victories, North Bend is off to a great start this fall, already claiming two victories. Hood, in his first year as head coach, said the team has shown great spirit and is motivated to build on its early season success.

Pacific Boys

Coach: Tom Swenson

2007 League Record: 7-3-2

Returning Lettermen (returning starter in italics): Julian Carter, sr, goalkeeper; Jarrid Doffing, sr, forward; Shane O'Brien, jr, midfielder; Thomas Oberbeck, jr, midfielder; Pete Swenson, soph, midfielder; Josh Valentine, soph, defender; Tyler Moehring, soph, forward.

Key Newcomers: Chris Stout, Ryan Duncan, Jonathan Everest, Julie Baker.

Outlook: The Pirates have a relatively young team that is solid on defense, led by all-league goalie Carter. Between Carter and Doffing, Pacific has strong leadership that should help the younger players develop. The Pirates have had a strong program and always seem to be in contention for the playoffs.

Class 3A-2A-1A    District 3 boys

Gold Beach

Coach: Steve Martin

2007 League Record: 0-9-1

Returning Lettermen (returning starters in italics): Jake Hatten, sr, goalkeeper; Andrew Martinez, sr, forward; Aaron Eells, sr, fullback; Miles Bernadett-Peters, jr, midfielder; Brodey Carpenter, jr, midfielder; Dylan Vila, sr, fullback; Robby Duffy, soph, midfielder.

Key Newcomers: Alex Eklof, sr, midfielder; Crystal Bonotto, jr, forward.

Outlook: The Panthers, a coed program, are in their third year as a developing program. The team has shown great improvement, and Martin, in his first year as coach, expects the Panthers to be competitive. One of their biggest challenges will be the league, which has three private schools and three other schools with established programs.
