NORTH BEND — Tuesday’s North Bend City Council meeting was a tearful one as City Recorder Angie Kellar sat for her last time in front of the dais.
Kellar, a 9-year city employee, and North Bend’s recorder for six, will be taking a job at the University of Oregon in Eugene, as the assistant to the chief of staff of the vice president of student affairs.
Though she is excited to take her new position, Kellar, 40, said it will be difficult to leave North Bend. Her final day with the city is Oct. 7.
“I love my job and I love these people. It’s just heart wrenching to walk away from it,” she said Monday in her office. “It’s time for some bigger, better things.”
Kellar has family and friends in Eugene and has wanted to move to the larger city for some time. She was born and raised in Coos Bay and lives in North Bend.
Kellar said she especially will miss City Administrator Jan Willis, who sang Kellar’s praises at the city council meeting, because they’ve worked closely together for years.
“We’ve worked in these two offices together since day one. She’s an excellent boss,” Kellar said.
She added that without Willis’ help and encouragement, she never would have become the city’s recorder. Kellar first served as an accounting technician for North Bend.
Since she began working with the city, Kellar has become a certified municipal clerk through the International Institute of Municipal Clerks at the Northwestern Clerks Institute on the campus of the University of Puget Sound. She also recently resigned from her position as second vice president of the Oregon Association of Municipal Recorders.
During the meeting, both Willis and Kellar teared up, as the city administrator wished her luck.
“I just wanted to comment, she’s been a great right-hand person and I’ll miss her a lot,” Willis told the council.
Afterward, she said she and Kellar have worked quite well together.
“She’s just an asset to the city. ... She’s just been a great employee,” Willis said. “The chemistry was there. She’s just one of those people who have the natural intelligence, abilities and desire.”
Willis said the position is being advertised and will close on Oct. 3. Several people already have applied. She hopes to make a selection by the third week of October. In the meantime, Willis, along with the help of other staff, will manage the city recorder job.
