Candlelight vigil set

Wednesday, September 24, 2008 |
They’ll gather in Coos Bay to hold candles just after sunset. Families and friends of people who been murdered will hold a vigil to honor and remember their loved ones starting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25.
People who would like to attend are asked to gather in the Coos Bay Safeway parking lot. Then a caravan of cars, some festooned with red and black balloons, will travel north on U.S. Highway 101 at 7:15 and arrive at Mingus Park by 7:30.
Organizer Jenie Shilling encourages those who wish to attend to bring a photo of the person who they would like to honor.
“Last year, our grassroots vigil had four people show up,” Shilling said, “We really hope to gather up more survivors of homicide to join us.”
Ultimately, Shilling would like to form a Parents of Murdered Children chapter in Coos County. The national organization holds conferences throughout the country and provides scholarships for those who can’t afford to attend on their own.
For more information, those interested can contact Shilling at 297-6348 or Cory Courtright at 260-5152.
