COOS BAY — It’s been a long time coming.

From the first time Alyssa Birrer stepped onto the Bay Area Teen Idol stage in 2006, it was clear to many observers that someday her powerhouse voice would win her the contest title.

That day came Saturday, when three years of competing paid off with prizes including $500 and a scholarship to Southwestern Oregon Community College.

“It had its ups and downs,” Birrer said of her road to the title. “It’s good to have the plaque in my hands.”

Birrer, a North Bend High School sophomore, was named the winner after she and three other finalists each performed three songs on the main stage of the Bay Area Fun Festival, in front of a crowd of more than 400. Star Moralez finished second, Mariah Rogers was third and Destyni Fuller was fourth.

In a very close race, it came down to the third round, when Birrer’s performance of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” put her over the top.

“She stood out a little more than everyone else,” said Mike Campbell of Charleston, one of four judges at the final. “Star Moralez has a beautiful voice, but Alyssa is just a great performer.”

Also judging were Kim Handsaker, Barbara Bates and guest judge David Walker, a KVAL anchor and Marshfield graduate who is new to Teen Idol.

Before the prizes were handed out, Coos Bay Mayor Jeff McKeown presented medals to all 17 contestants, each of whom performed several times in the final.

There were a lot of strong performances, including many from eliminated contestants who returned to repeat their best songs — Caitlin Mansfield with “Everywhere,” Alisha Molloy with “I Won’t Say I’m In Love,” and Krista Kilmer with “What a Feeling,” among them — as well as 2007 winner Clint Guevara.

Fuller was disappointed not to be at her best, but she showed she could step out of her comfort zone on Shania Twain’s “Man, I Feel Like a Woman.”

Rogers got her best finish ever after strong performances in the last two rounds with Colbie Caillat’s “Bubbly” and “Love Potion No. 9,” for which she dressed as a boy.

Moralez wowed the crowd in the first round with possibly her best-ever performance on “I Will Always Love You,” but in the third round she was upstaged by her backup dancers — a trio of young ballerinas who joined her for “Tiny Dancer.”

“Star, when she’s in her element, she’s unbeatable,” Birrer said. “She’s got a unique style.”

Birrer’s other performances included Martina McBride’s “Whatever You Say” and “When You Got It, Flaunt It,” from “The Producers,” for which she tried on a Swedish accent.

“She knew she needed an extra point or two somewhere, when you’ve got someone who can sing as well as Star,” said Lisa Boyle, Birrer’s mother.

Handsaker said the final tally was close and could have gone either way.

But Birrer was able to put the finishing touch on a Teen Idol career that has seen more weekly top scores than any other. It took a lot of work.

“Every minute that I wasn’t in school or soccer practice, I was rehearsing,” she said. “It’s time-consuming, but it pays off.”

Birrer said her experience with the program began as an audience member in its first year, 2003, when performances by Koral Aakre and Dan Gibbs sparked a love of performing. Around the same time, she first sang on stage in a SWOYA talent show and performed in a sixth-grade musical, where she found her calling.

“As soon as I stepped into musical theater, that was it,” she said.

Her first “real” show, Little Theatre on the Bay’s “Anything Goes” in 2007 sealed it. Birrer said she’s gotten a lot of help from people who were in the cast, especially Byrell Justice, but she gave the most credit to her mother.

Though she went into last year’s Teen Idol with the expectation of winning, Birrer said she was glad to have another year in the contest.

“Probably the high point of my entire Teen Idol experience was ‘Faithfully,’” Birrer said of her Aug. 7 performance. “I wouldn’t have been able to do that if I’d won the previous year. Performances like that do not come around all the time.”

Now that it’s over, Birrer said she’s looking forward to the break so she can “be a teenager” for a while, before she returns to the LTOB stage for several upcoming shows.

As she pursues her Broadway dream, Birrer said she’ll have good memories of Teen Idol.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” she said. “There’s always drama when you get a bunch of teenagers together, but overall it’s and excellent experience for anyone who wants to be on stage.”

Alyssa really did well but Star was my definite favorite and I hope she competes next year.

Proud mom- I didn't insinuate anything about Alyssa, but some of the people Star and I ran into did. You know, they *really, really* liked her and not in any innocent sort of way. My point was that Star didn't stoop to that level and agree with them. Please read carefully.

Proud Mom wrote on Sep 27, 2008 1:36 AM:

STOP! PLEASE!

Both Alyssa and I acknowledged that Star did an excellent job, the Teen Idol board brought in an out of area judge, everyone did what they could to make this fair and give credit where it is due...
Will you stop at nothing to sully the reputation of a 15 year old? To insinuate that Alyssa did something dirty to earn the title?
How do you expect people to view Star when her fans constantly attack Alyssa?
Do you think it reflects a positive attitude or poise?

These are kids! Please, wish them well and congratulate them.

Beach bum you have no idea what kind of person Star is. She unquestioningly and willingly handed over the entirety of her second place winnings to someone else who needed it very badly without a single grumble. That's what kind of person she is. And you would not believe some of the disgusting comments spoken to her about Alyssa that I heard the next day from dirty old men while I was wandering the Fun Fest with her. She handled that with absolute aplomb and utter grace, as well. I've known Star for 11 years. I know exactly what kind of person she is. You obviously do not.

Alyssa---you did a great job, don't listen to any more of this drivel. Your songs were perfect and the audience knew the judges got it right.
Keep up the good work!

CREEPY wrote on Sep 24, 2008 1:37 PM:

another concerned fan- i sure was there. You have your opinion, I have mine. I'm not tearing Alyssa down. I just thought the songs she chose were pretty safe.

Another concerned fan wrote on Sep 24, 2008 12:37 PM:

Creepy...enough already!

Were you there? Did you not hear Alyssa sing in a Swedish accent? She EARNED this AND she acknowledged her excellent competition during her interview...I have not seen any other winners do that.
I was disappointed that Alyssa did not win last year, but I never saw that as a reason to tear down her competition.

Congratulations Alyssa...you should be proud.

CREEPY wrote on Sep 24, 2008 6:11 AM:

it seemed Alyssa picked some awfully safe and uninteresting songs while Star and the other contestants really stepped up and took some risks. Judging by the applause, the audience knew who the better singer was. Destyni's final song was great and showed a sense of humor. And someone show that soundguy the gain knob, please.

THE BEACH BUM wrote on Sep 24, 2008 12:25 AM:

I stand by what I said. The better person and best performer won. Congratulations again Alyssa!!

Ron Burgundy wrote on Sep 23, 2008 11:37 AM:

Wow....absolutely smokin hot!!

Stay classy, Coos Bay

Another concerned fan wrote on Sep 23, 2008 8:11 AM:

Alyssa--congrats! You have a talent that will take you far!
Star-- you were terrific, the article does not mention "At last", which I thought was one of your best.
Mariah--What a great time to peak! You definitely earned "Most Improved" in going from a shy girl to a performer!
Destyni-- Don't be afraid to take risks, I loved seeing your fun side with Shania. It WILL pay off.
For everyone...your performances on Saturday were your best! Keep up the good work.
Thanks KDOCK and others for the summer entertainment. I do believe that we will someday be saying we knew these kids when as well!

TO BEACH BUM wrote on Sep 22, 2008 9:37 PM:

OH YEAH A BETTER PERSON WHAT A RUDE THING TO SAY. JUST BECAUSE SHE WON THIS CONTEST DOESN'T MAKE HER A BETTER PERSON OR A BETTER SINGER FOR THAT MATTER I MEAN LOOK AT STAR SEARCH IT WAS TELEVISED AND STARS LIKE BRITTANY SPEARS AND JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE LOST ON THERE. WHY DON'T YOU JUST SAY GREAT JOB AND LEAVE IT AT THAT.

c.b.businessman wrote on Sep 22, 2008 3:15 PM:

I was impressed to see the acolades the winner, Alyssa Birrer, gave the other contestants, including the runner up. She showed some real class in doing so.

CB Lifer wrote on Sep 22, 2008 2:34 PM:

Congratulations to all who participated and to Alyssa! I think they are ALL good people and good performers! Again, Congratulations!!

darla wrote on Sep 22, 2008 2:23 PM:

I hope Star will return next year. Next year will be her year.

What a Shame wrote on Sep 22, 2008 12:57 PM:

Well Miss Birrer, my hat is off to you for winning the teen idol contest, you deserve to have won it. I am sure the $500 dollars will come in handy to futher your education, but if I were you I think I would give it some serious thought about attending SWOCC. Someone with your intelligence and your drive deserves a lot better than this little hick community, so called college. Maybe you could talk to someone and be able to trade the scholorship for something you could really use and be helpful to you.....Like maybe a taco, or maybe a ticket to Eugene, or maybe a trip to Disney Land...You would get a lot more out of these that you would by wasting your time at this so called college. Don't downgrade yourself by going there, you deserve better.

the beach bum wrote on Sep 22, 2008 12:51 PM:

GREAT JOB ALYSSA!!!! WE KNEW YOU WERE THE BETTER PERSON AND THE BEST PERFORMER!!!
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

Proud Mom wrote on Sep 22, 2008 12:48 PM:

Congratulations to all the girls (and boy!)...I saw some of the very best performances ever in Teen Idol on Saturday.

Steve Pickering wrote on Sep 22, 2008 11:25 AM:

Congratulation Alyssa. I wish you the best in your career. Maybe someday the residents of the bay area can say "We knew you when".

And congratulations to all who participated. Job well done. Stay clean, and stay sober. You will go far, all of you.

Mike The Bear wrote on Sep 22, 2008 11:24 AM:

I am very proud of all the contestants.

I will miss each and every one of them. They are truly all champions in my book.

Thank you Coos County for coming out and supporting this golden event.
