So close, yet so far away.

Titan Salvage is down to whittling away at the last remains of the New Carissa. But in classic New Carissa fashion, it just won’t cooperate.

The crew stayed late Saturday in an attempt to pull the last rusting remnant of the stubborn stern. It stayed put.

As darkness fell, the crew decided to pack it in and go out Sunday to collect the rest of the wreck it has been battling, cutting, pulling, rocking and lifting this whole summer.

The plan was to cut it in smaller pieces and pluck it out of the surf. By about 10 a.m., Salvage Master Shelby Harris wasn’t quite sure that would happen.

 He was determined.

Once again, it didn’t work.

“Pretty much all we did was pull out rigging points,” Harris said Sunday evening.

The crew hadn’t budged the wreck and they still had plenty work to do to re-secure the it. But darkness fell.

“We spent 15 hours out here yesterday,” Harris said. “We will probably spent 15 hours again.”

There is so little of the New Carissa left that even the small surf Sunday was enough to move it around.

Northwest winds and swells — the same kind crews saw earlier this month at the wreck — are forecast to prevail through Tuesday as another thermal trough develops. It’ll be a weaker one, but the waves still will be quick and choppy.

On Wednesday, a cold front will bring southerly winds with it. It’s more typical of a winter storm, with longer periods between the swells, but by Wednesday night, the swells are forecast to build to between 10 and 11 feet tall.

Southerly winds of up to 25 miles per hour are forecast to hit on Wednesday during the day.

“The most important thing we can do is have a good hold on it,” Harris said.

He said it’s frustrating not to have any success, but the crew will keep plugging away.

“”You go out and do what it takes,” Harris said. “That’s not always what you planned.”
