They met in a jam session on Oahu, Hawaii’s North Shore in 1973. They knew as soon as they sang together that theirs was a match.

Cecilio Rodriguez and Henry Kapono provide original and contemporary composition influenced by American folk and acoustic music at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Music on the Bay’s Starlight Concert Series in Mingus Park in Coos Bay. The concert is free.

Cecilio and Kapono might be from Hawaii, but both men come from very different music backgrounds. Rodriguez, a Hispanic-American Indian, is bi-lingual and professionally trained, while Kapono is self-taught, according to their Web site, http://www.cnk35.com.

Some of their performances include Hawaii’s version of Woodstock, and the Diamond Head Crater’s Sunshine Festival. They hold the largest attendance record at the Waikiki Shell with 4,000 fans inside the amphitheater, and 10,000 fans outside, according to their Web site.

They have shared the stage with greats like Santana, Peter Frampton, Cheech and Chong, and Loggins and Messina to name a few. This concert tour around the U.S. marks the men’s 35th anniversary performing together.
