Bedard takes title in Pizza Rays tourney

Newcomer Mark Bedard took top honors in the annual Pizza Rays Seniors tournament, while Don Young shot his age again to win the Legends flight in the event at Forest Hills Country Club in Reedsport this week.

Bedard, who turned 50 in the past year, had a two-round total of 153, 9-over par, to take low-gross honors in the Freshman flight, for golfers 50 to 62 years old. He also had the best score of any golfer in the event.

Young, meanwhile, the oldest golfer in the 63-player field at 90, had a 77 the first day of the tournament, and a 91 the second, to win the flight for players 77 to 90 years old by one shot over Dick Henry.

Dick Manthe had the best score in the Sophomore flight, for players 64 to 67 years old, with a 164. Joe Higgens posted a two-day total of 166 to win the Junior flight, for golfers 68 to 71. Jim Wells won the Senior flight (71-76) with a score of 165.

The best net scores for each division were Tim Lewis in the Freshman flight (138), Don Bangs in the Sophomore flight (140), Jim Reynolds in the Junior flight (138), David Morgan in the Senior flight (126) and Duane Beyer in the Legends flight (134).

The tournament Wednesday and Thursday was played under sunny skies.
