The masters swimming clinic held last weekend was such a big success a second clinic has been scheduled for Sept. 28.

The first clinic drew 19 adults, ranging in age from 30 to 75. They learned how to swim the butterfly, breaststroke and backstroke and how to improve their turns during races.

A second clinic will be held from to 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 28 at Mingus Park Pool. During that clinic, swimmers will learn how to use fins, paddles, kickboards and pull buoys to swim better. Interval training also will be explained during a discussion on workout techniques and how to swim faster.

Local masters swimmers also will give advanced instruction on the stroke techniques.

Any adult swimmers able to swim at least one length are welcome to attend. The regular pool fee will be charged, but the instruction is free.

Miles finishes triathlon

Former Marshfield boys basketball coach Doug Miles has taken up a new challenge.

Miles recently finished his first-ever triathlon, completing the Lincoln City Sprint near Devil’s Lake in 1 hour, 19 minutes and 5 seconds. He finished 57th out of 107 participants and was seventh in the men’s 35-39 age group.

The swim was the toughest part of the competition, with a course covered in fog and the water at 62 degrees. Miles was one of just five swimmers who did not use a wetsuit.

Miles is looking forward to his next sprint-level triathlon and is training to compete at the Olympic distance.
