Lakers win two matches at crossover

The Southwestern Oregon Community College volleyball team beat two of its three foes on the opening day of the Southwestern Crossover Tournament Friday.

“The team really played well together today and made some amazing plays,” said Southwestern coach John Speasl. “They are having fun and they are fun to watch.”

Southwestern topped Yakima 25-23, 25-16, 25-11 and beat Walla Walla 25-22, 25-23, 25-22. In between those matches, the Lakers fell to Edmonds 25-14, 25-12, 25-21.

The crossover tournament continues today, with games at both Prosper Hall and the Rec Center.

Jessica Bond had 69 assists, 14 kills and five aces for the Lakers on Friday. Kristine Kosinski had 18 kills and six stuff blocks, Katie Jolliffe had 24 kills, Ema Chitwood had 12 kills, Taylor Scott had 24 digs and Laurie Breuer had 18 digs.

Edmonds was perfect on the day, also beating Umpqua 25-16, 25-22, 25-20 and outlasting Walla Walla 18-25, 25-19, 25-27, 25-19, 15-13 in the match of the day.

Walla Walla beat Green River 25-20, 25-20, 25-22. Green River topped Yakima 21-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-17; Umpqua 25-18, 17-25, 25-16, 25-14; and Skagit Valley 25-19, 25-20, 19-25, 25-23.

Skagit Valley topped Umpqua 25-19, 27-25, 25-11, and beat Yakima 25-11, 25-19, 25-23.

Today’s schdule includes:

10 a.m.: Green River vs. Edmonds, Skagit Valley vs. Walla Walla and Yakima Valley vs. Umpqua.

Noon: Skagit Valley vs. Southwestern, Yakima Valley vs. Edmonds and Umpqua vs. Walla Walla.

2 p.m.: Southwestern vs. Green River.
