Keelan McDuffy scored three touchdowns to lead Reedsport to a 38-12 win over visiting Rogue River in the Sunset Conference opener for both teams.

McDuffy returned the second-half kickoff 73 yards for a score and later added touchdown runs of 15 and 6 yards as the Braves scored the final 26 points of the game.

The Braves took an early 12-0 lead on touchdown runs by Cory Christoffersen of 27 and 12 yards.

The Chieftains answered with a 2-yard scoring run by Rogue Berman and a 17-yard pass from Jon Humphries to Brennen Schoner.

Josh Palmer gave the Braves the lead for good with an 8-yard run.

Reedpsort held Rogue River to 12 rushing yards on 25 attempts and intercepted four passes, with Christoffersen, Dillon Chudy, Ismael Osorio and Kole Freestone making the picks.

McDuffy had 131 rushing yards on 14 carries.

Panthers win league opener

Jeffrey Knox returned two punts for touchdowns and had two other long scoring runs as Gold Beach beat visiting Glide 56-6 on Friday.

“Knox was possessed tonight,” Gold Beach coach Kevin Swift said of his senior quarterback, who also had a touchdown pass to Todd Martin.

The Panthers had their second straight big win after losing to North Valley.

“My kids have a chip on their shoulder again,” Swift said. “North Valley was the best thing that happened to us. We had our best week of practice.”

The Panthers also are improving on the line, Swift said.

Garrett Wolford, Travis Moore and Travis Smith also had scoring runs for Gold Beach, which visits Coquille next week.

Cole Walker had a late touchdown for the Wildcats.

Challengers roll

Cascade Christian scored 38 straight points to pull away from Coquille, beating the Red Devils 45-15 in the Sunset Conference opener.

Tyler Stickler scored the first of three touchdowns in the opening minutes, and Coquille answered with an 87-yard kickoff return by Joseph Harris.

It was all Challengers after that. In addition to Stickler’s touchdowns, Brandon Grissom had two scoring runs, Taylor Thomas pulled in a touchdown pass from Colton Cochran and Drew Davis kicked a 32-yard field goal.

Cascade Christian rushed for 443 yards to break a two-game losing streak.

Josh Duke scored Coquille’s other touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Bobcats rally for win

Myrtle Point’s Scott Clark scored the winning touchdown with 5:45 to go in the fourth quarter and Willy Looney intercepted a pass on the final play as the Bobcats rallied for a 20-18 win over visiting Bandon on Friday.

Myrtle Point’s Kyle Davis had two first-half touchdown passes — to Willy Looney and Ryan Hamilton as the Bobcats built a 14-0 lead.

But Bandon’s Gage Gant intercepted a pass in the final moments of the first half and returned it for a score to narrow the halftime deficit to 14-8.

The Tigers took the lead with a safety on a bad punt snap by the Bobcats and a 44-yard run by Jimmy Mack, but Myrtle Point rallied with Clark’s winning score in the final quarter.

The Bobcats, ranked eighth in this week’s coaches poll, improved to 4-0.

Far West League

Vikings fall

Newport outlasted visiting Siuslaw in a wild nonleague game, scoring the winning touchdown on an 8-yard run by Cody Hayner with 2:02 remaining for a 40-37 win.

The teams combined for 37 points in the fourth quarter. Siuslaw rallied from a 26-6 deficit with touchdown passes by Jacob Mitchell to Joe Swesey, Rivers Gage-Hunt and Mike Swoboda. Mitchell also had his second touchdown run of the game.

But Newport quarterback Mark Moore hit Tyler Larrea with a 60-yard touchdown pass after Mitchell’s run had given the Vikings a 30-26 lead and Hayner answered Swoboda’s touchdown with the winning score.

Mitchell passed for 230 yards in the loss.

Cruisers fall

Butte Falls shut out host Powers 66-0 Friday, keeping the Cruisers winless on the season.

Codey Myers had three touchdown passes for the Loggers and Chase Ellis, Josh McGonagle and Harlye Casillas each scored twice.
