North Bend’s boys soccer team edged host Pacific 1-0 Thursday to stay perfect in Far West League play.

The Bulldogs got a 53rd-minute goal from Sean Jany and strong defense to beat the Pirates. Jany was able to chip the ball over a defender and Pacific’s keeper to score the go-ahead goal, despite the fact that the Pirates had outshot North Bend 3-1 in the match. Kyle Demming assisted on the goal.

“That was a great personal effort on Jany’s part,” said Pacific coach Tom Swenson. “This was a good game. We were pretty evenly matched.

“I think for Pacific, this was probably one of the better performances we had this year.”

North Bend coach Blaine Demming said both teams played a strong defensive match and that Bulldogs Jake Schneider, Chase Scott and Kyle Demming did a good job working the midfield during the second half.

Red Devils roll

Coquille’s Cole Waddington had a hat trick as the Red Devils beat visiting Douglas 7-1 Thursday.

The Red Devils controlled the ball most of the game and had 46 shots, to just six for Douglas. Coquille scored six of its goals in the first half.

German Ferrer scored on an assist by Ryan Dannels in the fourth minute, and Waddington scored his first two goals, both on assists from Tito Rangel, in the 21st and 22nd minutes.

Waddington assisted a goal by Mauro Sakuma in the 26th minute and Nate Slater had a rebound goal in the 33rd. Waddington added another goal late in the half on a third assist from Rangel and Rangel scored the final goal on a rebound in the 52nd minute.

“We attacked very well in the first half and in the second we tried to play more of a control game,” said Coquille coach Randy Lucas. “It was the kind of game coaches like to see because we were not relying on the same players to score.”

Dannels, who had a hat trick in the teams first three matches, had just a single assist Thursday.

Bruins shut out Sutherlin

The Brookings-Harbor boys soccer team shelled Sutherlin at home, tallying 30 shots on goal and winning 9-0.

Linden Loren, Dylan Roberts and Anthony Babz all had three goals apiece for the Bruins. Loren added two assists.

“There wasn’t too much resistance on the other side,” said Brookings-Harbor coach Gabriel Anaya. “Sometimes that happens. I don’t think they had any shots on goal.

“It’s kind of bad, sometimes you can get too confident. I like to see games a little more even.”

Lancers win again

South Umpqua shut out Illinois Valley at home in nonleague boys soccer action.

Jake Goodson started scoring off for the Lancers with an 18th-minute goal. Tim Wilson added another goal in the 30th minute, Nathan Ronco had another in the 56th minute and Charlie Shellard capped the win with a 78th-minute score.

Brandon Bowers and Brian Bowers had two assists apiece.

The Lancers outshot Illinois Valley 24-14.

“This was good to get our momentum going again, and get some structure back on our team,” said South Umpqua coach Rick Dewitt, whose team has lost its last two league matches.

GIRLS SOCCER

Far West League

Bulldogs edge Glide

North Bend’s girls soccer team won its second straight match, edging visiting Glide 1-0.

Taylor Cribbins had the lone goal for the Bulldogs, just as she did in Tuesday’s win over Douglas. Brooke Davison assisted on Thursday’s goal, which came in the 62nd minute.

“I’m just ecstatic,” said North Bend coach Dustin Hood. “These kids — they’re jazzed right now. They feel confident. We’re passing well and playing great team defense.”

Anna Houghton had the shutout in goal for North Bend and the entire team defense played well, Hood said. He added that Sammie Clark did a great job defensively on Glide’s Shelby Heidrick.

The Bulldogs improved to 2-2 in league, tied with Umpqua Valley Christian for fourth place.

Trojans tip Coquille

Douglas outshot visiting Coquille 15-7 and capitalized on two chances to defeat the Red Devils 2-0.

Courtney Walton struck first for the Trojans, on a chip shot in the 19th minute. Kaitlyn Strain scored Douglas’ second goal on a breakaway in the 63rd minute.

“We’re pretty evenly matched,” said Coquille coach Mark Usselman. “They just played a little bit better on offense and we couldn’t strike the ball well on our offensive end.”

The game was a matchup of two youthful teams.

“We’re both younger teams,” said Usselman. “We’ll just have to work on the little things. We were there. We just couldn’t put the ball in the net.”

Bruins win

Brookings-Harbor stayed unbeaten in the league standings by beating host Sutherlin 3-0 on Thursday.

South Umpqua wins big

Victoria Jackson had five goals as South Umpqua beat Umpqua Valley Christian 7-1 on Thursday at Roseburg.

Wendy Stone and Kristina Hale also scored for the Lancers, who kept pace with Brookings-Harbor as the league’s only unbeaten teams. Both are 3-0-1.

Midwestern League

Pirates postponed

Marshfield’s match at North Eugene scheduled for Thursday has been postponed until Sept. 29 because of a scheduling conflict.
