The Coos County Airport District commissioners want to hold a special meeting to discuss how much to charge for parking fees at the new airport terminal. Up for debate is whether people will have to pay for short-term parking in addition to long-term parking.

This week the commissioners approved the lowest of three bids — $260,415 from SysParc of Van Nuys, Calif. — for a parking lot control system to be paid for through the building and reserve fund. The system would allow people to pay by cash or credit card.

Early revenue calculations are based on charging $5 per vehicle.

“We haven’t decided yet whether we would do short term or long term or it could be one fee,” Airport Executive Director Gary LeTellier said.

The talk of fees had at least one audience member concerned.

“What about the people who are running in here to buy a ticket?” asked Steve Pickering of Coos Bay. “Now their $350 ticket becomes a $355 ticket.”

Commissioner Joe Benetti said he personally is only looking at long-term parking fees.

“I’m not saying that I’m going to win this argument,” he said.

The meeting date and time will be announced later.

MR.Pickering, May I suggest letting someone else talk and quite arguing with the Coos County Airport District Commisioners. As a matter of fact, try listening some time when you go to any public meetings.

You give them more money they just find more ways to waste money. Look at Coos Bay! How many times have they changed the flow of traffic in downtown. Now they want to change it again. I guess the Council rejects went to the airport so they could waste more money.

Just what is the board and LeTellier getting out of building such a grand terminal for our small town, free golfing and eating at Bandon Dunes for life.
The rest of the area is certainly not getting anything out of the new terminal, with all its problems.
I just wish Bandon Dunes would step up one of these days and do something for the area that is making them so much money. The people that come there to golf and stay over and eat in there restaurants, do nothing for the other businesses in our area. Bandon Dunes is putting us on the map, but for who, golfers who care nothing about the rest of the area. Flying into an airport with a beautiful terminal and then driving through two towns with empty storefronts and no decent stores to speak of, and then through areas of dumpy houses with garbage in the yards, does not make good impressions on the golfers.
Anyway, I will not be flying out of North Bend any longer. I'll drive to Portland.

I agree about the small parking spaces.
I guess the board does not understand most of us have trucks. This is Coos County not PDX. Board wake up and listen to what people are saying.

Opinion wrote on Sep 23, 2008 4:33 PM:

Funny how this new airport was built for the rich golfers to come to our area (you know it was) but yet they fly, don't park cars ,obviously, board a shuttle to drive right on through our town without spending a dime and off to Bandon they go....so once again, the locals bare the burden. I am not sure how much more we can bare...short term parking fee would be a mistake, long term is marginal. The airport fiasco just won't go away, it is one embarrassing moment after another for our town. I'll be driving to Eugene/Portland for my travels, thank you very much!!

I've never seen so many unhappy and critical people in my life!!Run for office if you want to change something..If you can do a better job,Then Run for office and Get going on your perfect way of doing business.Otherwise get dropped off or take a taxi etc..

Common Sense wrote on Sep 23, 2008 11:52 AM:

I guess these Coos County Airport District commissioners clowns have to make up for their BAD pathetic decisions of remodeling an old Airport & then right after that building a NEW Airport, even though they NEVER secured any long term contracts with any major airlines prior to spending Tax Payers $$$ on these BAD business decisions? Too bad these useless clowns don't have to use their OWN personal $$$ to get these failed projects out of the RED...

I will be driving to Eugene to make my future connections.

lola wrote on Sep 23, 2008 3:12 AM:

The old airport had wonderful parking. I miss it.
I will never pay a dime to park at the new airport. This tiny town needs to realize what it is and act accordingly.

taxpayer wrote on Sep 22, 2008 9:03 AM:

You folks have missed the boat or the plane. I would much rather that the people who use the airport pay for it. My parents never fly but, are ok with the small taxes they pay as it allows their kids to come visit. Make those that use it pay the parking fees. Also you bozos need to watch Ch 14 instead of blogging all day - it sounds like they are going to allow the first hour or two to be free. I have not been to an airport that has free parking. I fly so I should pay more than my parents who don't.

oh well wrote on Sep 21, 2008 7:22 PM:

We all had to know this day would come. I love free parking and will miss it; but lets face it, no parking fees at an airport is a rare thing.

I think what the board has not calculated into the picture though is that most of us will resort to having someone drive us to the airport. I think the income they're counting on may never appear.

frequent flyer wrote on Sep 21, 2008 4:54 PM:

Please be careful when making this decision about charging for parking. If costs at our airport get too burdensome, people will flee to Eugene to make connections.

richard wrote on Sep 21, 2008 9:49 AM:

i useto fly when i went around the country but now i drive even with the high fuel costs i get to see more of this great land of ours i am retired which makes it easier for me to do so.
i did this when i got tired of the inmates runing the asylum...it looks like they have now taken over the parking lot and reaching out now for the $$$$$$$$$$ with their grubby hands you got to give them credit for abad job on a great white elephant.. hmmm!! maybe if they put some lipstick on it hmmm!

To Kay wrote on Sep 20, 2008 4:48 PM:

You are right. I feel so insulted by the people on this board. It will take a lot of convincing to get me to vote for any bonds here.

moonpenny wrote on Sep 20, 2008 10:11 AM:

You built this white elephant to appease "would be" golfers and now you want to charge people who live here and fly out, parking fees? How about charging the golfers an additional 5.00 per bag you touch. Dont screw the locals to pay for this Edsel of an airport.

Joe Sixpack wrote on Sep 19, 2008 9:49 PM:

With no side walks people have to walk with the cars something bad things will happen but with pay parking they will take good care of your car yeah right!!

Blue Eyes wrote on Sep 19, 2008 8:08 PM:

They are simply trying to take advantage of us. To ask us to pay for a parking slot in addition to having the air fares increased is insane. I will find another place to park and will bypass any request to pay to park. The lot isn't even planned out with local drivers in mind. We have alot of large vehicles here and the slots are too narrow. Wake up airport officals we are a samll town with mostly small town paychecks. You would think that all of these decisions were being made by people living outside the area. But, they aren't and that makes it extremely hard to understand.

Kate wrote on Sep 19, 2008 6:49 PM:

You have GOT to be kidding?!?! Charging for parking after the whole freakin' fiasco that you people have caused already? And, as "Occassional Flyer" points out, the parking lot is miserably difficult to navigate - the parking spots are too narrow, the road is too narrow, and it is almost impossible to fit even a compact car through! If the airport charges for parking, I will gladly call a taxi instead and give them my money instead of the ignorant people in charge of the airport. This is insane and a slap in the face to our community.

I wonder wrote on Sep 19, 2008 6:00 PM:

Just who did plan this whole new terminal and parking area. Did the airport board hire one of the local First Grade Classes to do the designing. I am so sorry First Graders, I am sure you would have done a better job actually.
This is what we get for probably hiring some out of area company to design something for our area. Thats usually what happens around here. And it always turns out to cost way to much money and ends up a disaster in the end.

What a shame wrote on Sep 19, 2008 3:35 PM:

These people have to realize something. This is just a little small town airport that just has what, maybe a dozen flights a day. Get real, this is not a matropolus, this is North Bend, Oregon, a small town on the west coast with a small town airport. You already get part of my property tax, you are not getting my money for parking. If I want to fly out of here I would rather fly out of Lakeside or may Agago or even maybe Agness. Get the picture???

Consider the Consequences wrote on Sep 19, 2008 1:13 PM:

You better start coordinating with the NB Poice Department - because airport users are NOT going to pay if they can park their car on the street by BLM or in Airport Heights on Colorado... this fee is STUPID and should NOT be invoked because there is going to be some unintended consequences and nuisances that you are going to create.

No Brainer wrote on Sep 19, 2008 12:45 PM:

If they charge for short term parking, that will be just another dumb idea , among all their other dumb ideas at this place. Paying to park for a few minutes at this small airport , to let someone out and carry their bags in for them, or to pick someone up, is just plain rediculous.
Boy, they have such 'big ideas' about this very small airport, I cannot conceive how they come up with all these ideas. There is one airline and they built a terminal that should be in a MUCH bigger city than this, put in $1000 plus waste baskets, and everything else expensive that doesn't even work, and now paying to park, in a parking lot that is also rediculous, and hard to get around in.
Where does this community get such idiots anyway. To bad they don't read these comments.....
They don't care what we think, they think they are above us little taxpayers...who pay for everything.

Kay wrote on Sep 19, 2008 12:18 PM:

And don't forget, $15.00 instead of $6.00 when your taxi has to wait for your luggage to come down the gleaming new luggage carrier.

They'll get us one way or another. I will never again give them a dime. I'll pay someone to drive me to Portland.

It's an insult to every taxpayer.

And don't forget, ya can't buy a cup of coffee without cash, three dollah minimum purchase.

NO FEES wrote on Sep 19, 2008 12:01 PM:

If you had a bigger pick up/drop off zone then people wouldn't have to park to unload luggage and people. Don't nickel and dime the community because you are trying to make up money for the Portland flights. Its North Bend/Coos Bay for goodness sakes.
And then many people cant find a spot in short term so they have to park in long term...so they have to pay even more money? I think until you have a better parking situation that is monitored you should not charge for parking at all. We didn't cause the problem...you, the board, did!

Occassional Flyer wrote on Sep 19, 2008 11:21 AM:

I have taken a couple flights from the new airport terminal and I am very disappointed with the new parking lots. The lots are barely wide enough to drive through with vehicles parked on both sides and the parking spaces are also very narrow. I encourage them to modify the parking area before even considering making customers pay to park in the inadequate space.
