Quarterly report shows Oregon gaining jobs

SALEM (AP) — Oregon economic records show Oregon gaining slightly more jobs than it lost for the quarter ending last December.

Oregon Bureau of Labor statistics showed a job gain of 106,709 and a loss of 103,121, a gain of 3,588, from September to December of 2007. Most of the gains came from new businesses.

Employment Economist Art Ayre says the numbers demonstrate churning in the job market — at least 100,000 individual jobs were gained or lost in each quarter of 2007.

He says the statistics are from unemployment insurance reports filed by companies and are more detailed than the monthly employment reports from the state that are based on surveys of employers.

Earlier this week, the department’s survey statistics from August that showed the state’s jobless rate rose from 5.9 percent to 6.5 percent in a month, and the state suffered its largest job loss since 2003.
