Hornets edge Powers

“We broke down a little bit mentally, especially in Game 5, and missed some key serves and Camas was able to capitalize on that,” said Powers coach Beth Rector. “They’re really a scrappy team.”

Nicole Bittner had 16 kills, three blocks and 15 digs for the Cruisers. Kristin Clauson had nine kills, 26 digs and four aces; while Haley Patterson had 26 assists, 18 digs and four aces.

“They played OK at times, but there was other times that we fell apart and did not communicate very well,” Rector said. “We’re going to have to build on it and move on.”

The Cruisers visit Elkton on Thursday.

Elkton tops Pacific

Elkton beat host Pacific, 14-25, 25-15, 25-8, 25-15 on Tuesday.

The Pirates put up a great fight at the start against one of the league’s top teams.

“The first game, we took control,” said Pacific coach Tiffany Freitag. “The first game, we had focus and energy and they were just determined. No balls were going to hit the floor, and they were going to return every ball and get every service ball in and the energy was high.

“They had a really good tournament at Gold Beach, and I think that helped.”

But a veteran Elkton squad responded by taking the final three games as Pacific’s energy dropped, Freitag said.

“They have more experience dealing with the pressure of games,” she said. “I’m not sure we were ready to win and keep going. They are a very good team.”

Jesse Culley had nine kills, five aces, two digs and a block to lead Pacific’s attack. Ashley Curry had four kills, two blocks and two digs; Cassie Keeler had two aces, two kills and five digs; Heather Valentine had two aces, a block and a dig; and setter Devon Ashdown had six aces, one kill, one block, four digs and 15 assists.
