Clatsop County voters defeat LNG measure

ASTORIA (AP) — Clatsop County voters reversed the county commission’s decision to allow liquefied natural gas pipelines to cross through park land.
Opponents of the commission’s March decision gathered more than 1,500 signatures to put the issue before voters in a referendum. With most of the votes counted Tuesday night, 67 percent wanted to prohibit natural gas pipelines from crossing park land.
The referendum comes as the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is preparing to make a licensing decision on the Bradwood Landing LNG project. The LNG terminal would import, store and process supercooled liquefied natural gas for movement through pipelines.
Project opponents hope Tuesday’s vote will delay the developer’s progress, but it’s not certain what authority the county will have over the project’s pipeline route.
Joe Desmond, senior vice president for external affairs of NorthernStar Natural Gas, issued a statement saying the referendum “would have no meaningful impact on the project’s ability to continue forward.”
