ASTORIA (AP) — A Warrenton man accused of shooting a 22-year-old at a campground has been arraigned on a charge of a second-degree assault.
Clatsop County District Attorney Josh Marquis said Troy Buganan, 27, and others were drinking Monday at the Spruce Run Campground when they heard a noise in the brush.
Thinking it was an animal, Buganan opened fire with a .22-caliber rifle, Marquis said.
Five shots found the mark, striking Benjamin McCauley of Astoria.
McCauley was taken to Providence Seaside Hospital, then transported by LifeFlight to Oregon Health and Science University hospital in Portland, where he remained in an induced coma, Marquis said at Tuesday’s arraignment.
Circuit Court Judge Cindee Matyas set bond at $100,000 and assigned a lawyer to represent Buganan.
Marquis revealed at the hearing that Buganan has five previous alcohol-related convictions. A grand jury is expected to hear the case Friday. |
