Judge orders no-show jurors into court

EUGENE (AP) — More than 50 Lane County residents summoned for jury duty but who failed to show up last month now get to tell a judge why.

In August, Presiding Judge Mary Ann Bearden used a little-known law to send sheriff’s deputies onto the streets to round up jurors for immediate service after no-shows and a heavy trial schedule left the court short.

Acting courtroom administrator Liz Rambo said that because of the inconvenience to people taken off the street, Bearden and other judges will send show-cause orders to the 53 no-shows ordering them to tell a judge face-to-face why they did not appear. Those who fail to appear this time could face contempt of court charges.
