The leak-stained ceiling tiles and torn up floor boards in the Allegany Community Center soon will be a thing of the past.

Voters in the Millicoma River Park and Recreation District overwhelmingly supported investing in the district’s aging community building.

The unofficial totals from Tuesday’s vote from the Coos County Elections office showed 145  yes votes to 45 no votes in favor of the renovation. Of the 294 eligible voters, 188 cast ballots, easily surpassing the 50 percent voter turnout required for the local option tax levy to pass.

“It’s really exciting because an overwhelming majority of the people think it needs to be cared for and they are willing to pay for it,” Allegany resident Woodland Hood said.

The $125,000, five-year levy will have property owners in the district pay an estimated 71 cents per $1,000 of assessed value.

Hood’s husband, Dustin Hood, is the district board chairman. He said the first year’s money will go to pay off the roof installed this summer. The new outer shell costs about $44,000. A series of fundraisers for the roof brought out a surprising amount of support, which buoyed levy advocates hopes the tax measure would pass.

People were interested in keeping the center’s doors open and the building in good shape.

Recent canvasses of the district were strongly in favor, but Dustin Hood said the final 77 percent approval rating that put an exclamation point on the effort.

“You never really know about those things until they come in,” Hood said. “That’s great.”

A professional building inspection is the next step, along with forming a steering committee. The findings of the inspection will set the repair priorities for the remaining funding.

WONDERFUL!!!! I have so many memories of the Allegany school/community building. It's nice to read a positive story and know that it will be around for other families to enjoy, as much as our family enjoyed it..
