Plaza partyThe public is invited to “Party on the Plaza” from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the north end of Front Street, Coos Bay. The party celebrates the community’s acquisition of clear title to the site of the new museum and plaza, following more than a year of negotiations between the state of Oregon and the city of Coos Bay. The party is part of Fun Festival.
Party on the Plaza is sponsored by Umpqua Bank and Northwest Natural Gas. Activities will include an old-fashioned spoon race and an up-to-the-minute geocache challenge.
Partygoers will also have opportunities to enter in various drawings for cash and prizes, view antique cars, see the outline of the new museum and learn more about the museum programs. Books and other items from the museum store will be available as well as local author Bill Lansing. Lansing will be on hand to discuss his recent books, “Seeing the Forest for the Trees,” “Can’t You Hear the Whistle Blowin,” and “Remember When.” For more information, call Anne Donnelly at 756-6320.
Benefiting animalsThere will be a free FAWN (Friends of Animals With Needs) benefit auction from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Coquille Community Center. There will be food, fun, wine tasting, music and bargains for all.
Attendees can bid on quilts, jewelry, crafts, fine art, antiques, ethnic and vintage items.
Trips, restaurants, services, animal items and gift certificates also are available.
More than 100 items will be auctioned, and all the proceeds go to spay and neutering dogs and cats.

SundayLakeside breakfastThe Lakeside Lions Club will host an all-you-can-eat breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. Sunday at 890 Bowron Road, Lakeside. The cost is $6 for adults and kids are $3.50. The breakfast will include ham, sausage, eggs, blueberry pancakes, biscuits and gravy, hashbrowns and beverages.
Sea otter awarenessThe Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport will observe Sea Otter Awareness Week starting at 10 a.m. Sunday to Saturday, Sept. 27. The event’s purpose is to educate the public about the integral role that sea otters play in the marine ecosystem.

www.aquarium.orgExploring spiritualityA symposium potluck will be presented in partnership with the Pachamama Alliance at noon Sunday at Unity By the Bay, 2100 Union Ave., North Bend.
The event will be an exploration of a new global vision built on sustainability, spiritual fulfillment, and social justice, and is presented as part of Unity’s 11 Days of Peace celebration. Although no one will be turned away for lack of funds, the cost is $10, or a donation.
Eatin’ ribsPops BBQ Ribs Sidewalk Cafe presents its first rib-eating contest as part of the Bay Area’s Fun Festival at 4:30 p.m. Sunday. The contest involves eating three slabs within the time frame provided.
The one who eats the most ribs and cleans all the meat off the bones wins. The winner receives a trophy and future commercial spot. All contestants will receive a Pops BBQ T-shirt, gift card and coupons.
There will be a $30 entry fee, and a portion of the proceeds will go to the Special Olympics and Coos County Roller Girls.
