Foredune and South Dike road closures are postponed
Tuesday, September 16, 2008 10:27 AM PDT

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has postponed its planned closure of the Foredune and South Dike roads on Coos Bay’s North Spit until at least Oct. 13.

The Corps originally planned to close the roads today, but postponed its decision due to a change in the contractor’s schedule. Corps officials do not plan to close the roads until vehicles begin hauling rock to the north jetty.

The Corps awarded the contract to repair three damaged areas on the north jetty to Kerr Contractors, Inc. Kerr is testing rock at various quarries to determine its suitability for the project.

Once the contractor is ready to haul rock to the north jetty, the roads will close and remain closed until completion of the project, or March 15, 2009, whichever is sooner.

The jetty sustained damage in last December’s storms that has made it particularly vulnerable to a breach in future squalls that might result in sediment blocking the navigation channel or making its use unsafe.
