Elkton school chief thinking "charter"

ELKTON (AP) — The new superintendent of the Elkton School District says he will make a proposal to convert the small district into a charter school. Five other rural districts in the state have made that move in the past six years.

Superintendent Michael Hughes says the move would bring an infusion of funds to the cash-strapped district in the form of federal charter school startup grants, probably about $425,000 in planning and implementation. However the federal dollars come with conditions. The money can’t be used to fund ongoing operations. But it can buy training, technology, equipment, furnishings and curriculum.
