Wednesday

Time for a story

Story times at the Bandon Public Library will resume Wednesday. Toddlers, accompanied by an adult, will meet from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesdays. Pre-school students, ages 4 through 6, will meet from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.  Wednesdays or from 11 a.m. to noon Thursdays. Early readers, first grade and older, and Junior Great Books, grades four through six, will meet from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Thursdays.

Alzheimer’s talk

Kit O’Callaghan will speak on “Alzheimer’s Disease: Beginning to the End,” at the monthly Alzheimer’s Assoc-iation education meeting at 2 p.m. Wednesday,  at the North Bend Public Library, 1800 Sherman Ave. This meeting is open to the public. For more information, call 1-866-548-8392.

Natural disasters

The Friends of the Coos Bay public library are hosting “Oregon’s Greatest Natural Disasters” at 7 p.m. Thursday in the library’s Myrtlewood room. The presentation is the story of the floods, forest fires, earthquakes, eruptions, and tsunamis that have shaped Oregon and affected the people over the past 13,000 years. This program is free. Friday

Stamp club

Coos Stamp Club will have its first fall meeting at 2 p.m. Friday, in the cedar room in the Coos Bay Public Library. There will be a A.P.S. club circuit available for members, and some items will also be up for auction.

Meeting agenda includes plans for auctions, circuit counties, and programs. For more information, call John Day at 267-3338.

Saturday

Quilt festival

The Gold Beach Quilter’s Guild presents the award-winning 24th-annual “Festival of Quilts”  from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. The festival will be at the Event Center on the Beach, Highway 101 in Gold Beach.

The show includes wearable art, wall hangings, quilts, dolls, demonstrations, a country store, vendors, and a raffle. Lunch is available both days, and the daily admission is $2.50. For more information, call Kathy 247-7165.

Journalism in history

Southern Oregon Mayflower descendants will hear the presentation “Half a Century in Journalism –The Lighter Side” at 11:30 a.m. at the Wild River Brewing Company, 2684 N. Pacific Highway, Medford. Semi-retired journalist Cleve Twitchell, who will be covering humorous and bizarre happenings in his career, will give the presentation. The luncheon is open to anyone interested. Old time fiddles

The Oregon Old Time Fiddlers, District 5, will be playing from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Community Building in Winchester Bay. The public is invited to an afternoon of music. For more information, call 759-3419.

Beach potluck

The GUILD for After School Enrichment will hold a potluck on the beach party for members, guests, friends, teenagers, and anyone who wants to learn more about the happenings of the ORCO Arts. The barbecue will start at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Sunset State Park Beach gazebo in Charleston. 

Barbecue and wine

The Old Bridge Winery will host its annual barbecue from noon to 5 p.m.  Saturday at 50706 Sandy Creek Road in Remote. They will have St. Louis smoked pork ribs and chicken with side dishes, appetizers, and desserts. The cost is $15, and live music and wine tasting will be provided. Swinging

Marlo Dance Studio in Bandon is offering an East Coast swing class for adults and teenagers. Session one will be at 5:30 p.m. and session two at 6:30 p.m. starting Saturday. Greenacres dance

All dancers are welcome at 6:30 p.m. Saturday to the Greenacres Barn Dance in the Greenacres Grange Hall. The evening will start with an hour of advanced dances, and then all dancers will share the floor for three hours of invigorating dance. Ron Bell-Roemer will be the guest caller from Bend, and the locally-based All-Girl Impromptu Pickup Band will fill the hall with lively tunes.

This is the first in a series of nine monthly barn dances sponsored by the South Coast Folk Society, a local non-profit organization. Admission is $6; SCFS members, seniors, and students pay only $5. For more information, call Stacy at 756-4701, or Paul at 572-5370.
