Coquille student Tianna Huffman, age 8, placed second in two divisions in her first-ever karate tournament in the Clash on the Coast last month.
Huffman was second in both beginner forms and beginner sparring after just two months of training, attending classes at the Coquille Martial Arts school’s day camp and regular classes at the school.
“She has the kind of drive and determination that every coach dreams of,” said Karen Saxton of Coquille Martial Arts.
The Clash on the Coast was the beginning of the fall tournament season, which also includes a tournament in Coquille in December. That event will benefit Helpful Tomorrow, a children’s charity that provides scholarships for at-risk children so that they can participate in martial arts programs.
In addition to regular classes, Coquille Martial Arts offers a senior tae kwon do class, tai chi, grappling and weapons programs.
Coquille Martial Arts recently relocated its dojos in both Coquille and Bandon to larger buildings. |
