Pirates hold on for win over Ashland

COOS BAY — Quarterback Kyle Tedder was Marshfield’s biggest weapon against visiting Ashland on Friday night — but not with his arm.
Tedder rushed for 188 yards and two scores, leading the Pirates to a 33-28 win over the pesky Grizzlies.
Tedder’s biggest carry of the night wasn’t his longest run, or one of the touchdowns. It was a 12-yard gain on third-and-11 with just under 3 minutes remaining in the game.
“The play that Kyle made — that was just a huge play,” Marshfield coach Kent Wigle said.
Tedder had the option to throw to any of several receivers or keep the ball, and he tucked it under his right elbow and sped around the right end and down the sideline, getting just past the forward yard marker.
“I wasn’t going to be stopped short for anything,” he said.
The first down enabled the Pirates to run out the clock after the Grizzlies had whittled a once 21-point lead to just five behind the play of their own elusive quarterback —Talon Haggard.
“They are resilient,” Wigle said of the Grizzlies, adding that Haggard was “amazing.”
Haggard ran for 115 yards on 17 carries and had two rushing touchdowns of his own. After misfiring on 10 of his 13 passes in the first half, he finished the game 10-for-23 for 185 yards.
“You’ve got to give them credit,” Wigle said.
Marshfield jumped on the Grizzlies early to take a big lead, helped by Ashland miscues.
Haggard and Lewis Sebrell misconnected on a handoff on the Grizzlies’ first offensive play and Marshfield’s Marcus Beckett recovered to give the Pirates good field position at Ashland’s 28.
After Tedder converted a third-down play with his first carry of the game, Talo Silver ran around the left end for 10 yards and a touchdown.
Ashland fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Marshfield’s Bo Cutting recovered on the sideline. That led to the second score, a 5-yard blast by Kyle Brown less than 2 minutes into the game.
Marshfield was in business again when the Pirates stopped Ashland’s next drive and the snap to Haggard for the punt was high. He was swarmed under by three Marshfield defenders before he could get a kick or pass off.
But the Pirates committed their only turnover of the night when Brown fumbled inside Ashland’s 10-yard line.
It didn’t take long for Marshfield to get the ball back. The Grizzlies tried a fake punt on fourth-and-two from their own 25, but the Pirates weren’t fooled and Charlie Sebrell was stopped for a 4-yard loss.
This time, the Pirates converted. Tedder ran for 20 yards on first down and then connected with Chris Krajcir for a 5-yard score on a third-and-goal play with 1:57 to go in the opening quarter. Tedder’s kick made it 21-0 and the Pirates appeared in complete control.
Haggard started to do his damage for Ashland, though, running for 12 yards on a third-down play and then breaking several tackles to gain 6 yards on a fourth-and-five play. He finished the drive by hitting Oliver Krant with a 16-yard touchdown pass.
Tedder ran for 60 yards on his own on Marshfield’s next possession, and capped the drive with a 29-yard scramble for a touchdown on a quarterback draw.
The Pirates took a 27-7 lead into the locker room, only to see Haggard bring the Grizzlies back.
On Ashland’s first possession of the second half, he hit Charlie Sebrell for a 51-yard gain on a third-and-15 play from his own 8-yard line. Haggard capped the drive with a 12-yard scoring pass to Sebrell.
Tedder scored again to put Marshfield up 33-14 with 3:52 to go in the third, but Haggard led the Grizzlies back down the field and Sebrell made an amazing catch between two defenders at the 1-yard line on the final play of the quarter. He tipped the ball in the air and caught it while lying on his back on the turf.
Haggard scored on the first play of the final quarter to pull the Grizzlies within 33-20 and then had a 22-yard scoring run on a draw with 5:09 to go.
Haggard ran in for a two-point conversion and a 15-yard penalty on the Pirates after the play moved the line of scrimmage to Marshfield’s 45 for the ensuing kickoff, and the Grizzlies tried an on-sides kick. Marshfield’s Casey Weyer caught the ball on a bounce on the sideline to give the Pirates’ possession and Marshfield ran out the clock.
After Tedder’s big run, Brown clinched the win with a 20-yard gain for another first down. That run gave Brown 107 rushing yards and the Pirates 312 on the night.
“The line stepped up big-time,” said Brown, of Marshfield’s front five.
Tedder said the other difference was Marshfield’s effort.
“We just played hard,” he said.
The Pirates improved to 2-1 going into next week’s game against probably their toughest preseason opponent, Grants Pass.
Wigle said Friday’s win was a positive step for Marshfield, especially with three starters out of the game for a violation of the school’s student-conduct code.
“We did a lot of good things,” he said. “There’s no doubt about that.”
The top of that list was Tedder, who made good decisions and did not have any turnovers — he completed four of his six passes for 30 yards — after having three interceptions and a fumble in last week’s loss to Marist.
“Tedder had a really, really good ballgame,” Wigle said. |
