Stem cell research is greatest hope

As are most Americans, I am usually busy living my day-to-day life that I forget my life is shaped by those people we elect into office. This election, for me, is dramatically different.

In 2007, at the age of 33, I broke my neck and am now a quadriplegic. And although most of my life was taken from me, I still need to have hope. Maybe not so I can walk, but that maybe I can one day move my finger. Maybe not that I will once again give my kids piggy back rides, but that maybe one day I can brush my daughter’s hair. Maybe I won’t be able to make my husband dinner, but maybe one day I can be trusted near boiling water.

By my hope of ever doing any of these things is shattered if the relevant research is not allowed in this country. Stem cell research. This will cause many knee-jerk reactions by people who have no idea what it’s like to be in my situation. Some people spit the word “liberal” like it is a profanity when they hear the phrase “stem cell research.” But, for me, it is not a mental image of evil men in white lab jackets.

For me, it would be so I could be a “hockey mom” in “small town America.” This research, and the resulting medical advances, could one day guarantee that I would be able to “change” the way I do business here in America. I have my bootstraps, for me the challenge is figuring out how to pull myself up. Finding ways to improve the lives of people with spinal cord injuries through stem cell research would let me be a better mom to my kids, a better wife to my husband, more productive at my job, more involved in my community and restore my faith in all the prayers being said on my behalf.

I challenge you to think about people in my situation when you fill out the bubbles in your ballot this fall. Because I no longer can; however, there is hope that someday I will be able to do so again if the right decisions are made in November. Change only happens when we have a choice. Please don’t take away mine.

Please vote for Barack Obama.

To Mark Smith.
Some times dear fellow, one (or a whole nation) must take a leap of faith rather then continue down the same path. It seems to me we have gone down this path of none productivity much to long and it's time the Citizens of the United States took an honest look at our politics. We should ask ourselves whither we're better off then we were eight years when George Bush took over leadership. I know CB/NB isn't and after traveling much of the U.S. this past year, I can tell you the rest of the country is almost as bad off. So.. Lets try someone different in that White House for awhile with a leap of faith. Perhaps having a leader with 21st century ideas will help those like Anna find a way to a new life.

I believe that stem cell research is going to cure thousands and thousands and ultimately help in the cure for AIDS and CANCER. Most of us are lucky and do not have a dibilitating injury or a death sentance hanging over our heads. I would rather have died trying than to have given up. So while you are getting out of bed in the morning to start your day, stop and think about those who can't!
O-ORDER STEM CELL RESEARCH
B-BRING OUR TROOPS HOME
A-AUDIT ALL EXISTING POLOTITIONS
M-MANAGE OUR BORDERS
A-ALLOW FREE BASIC HEALTH CARE

Do the above and I will actually want to vote!

There are other sources for stem cells that are being discovered.
Banking the birth cord of a new born is one way. Recently read an article from a dentist advising parents to bank the pulp from their childrens teeth as they are lost. The cells in the pulp could be used if the child ever were to develop an illness when stem cells may be needed.

The idea of creating living embryos so that they can be killed for their stem cells is premeditated murder.
Adult stem cells and extracting stem cells from placentas are in clinical trials at this time.

Anna-Though I have been following this election a little closer than others, I still was not overly informed of their stand on science. So thank you. Your letter was truly eye-opening and touching. My vote already stands with Obama but now more than ever. Stem cell research can provide huge advances for those suffering diseases or from crippling injuries such as your own. It's easy for those not suffering to be ignorant. At 22, I have a debilitating back condition that may prevent me from having children of my own and may even leave me wheelchair bound one day. I hope it never comes to that and I hope Mr. Obama can provide that change that will allow you some use of your limbs someday. It is not fair for your body to be a prison. My thoughts are with you. VOTE OBAMA!!!!

you are correct Samuel wrote on Sep 17, 2008 8:18 PM:

you know Samuel, you make sense. I really had not thought about it that way. Im a republican but I think sense the election is called most years before we are really even counted that I may do as you are saying. Why not, it will send only a small message, but a message none the less.

Mark Smith wrote on Sep 17, 2008 3:52 PM:

Although the premise behind stem cell research is good, how do we keep it from the hands of people who would use it to further negative ends? When we open pandoras box who is going to close it?

That is what scares me as with many things there is a cost beyond the obvious. It could help but it could also hurt.

McCain opposes embryonic stem cell research that uses cloned human embryos. In 2006 he supported a trio of U.S. Senate bills designed to increase federal funding for adult stem cell research, ban the creation of embryos for research and offer federal support for research using embryos slated for destruction by fertility clinics. In 2007, in what he described as "a very agonizing and tough decision," he voted to allow research using human embryos left over from fertility treatments. - Pew Forum, 2008

VOTE OBAMA wrote on Sep 15, 2008 9:27 PM:

Anna - your letter is right on the money. Obama/Biden is the ONLY choice in this election if you value the benefits progressive scientific research and do not want to live in an archaic world of fear, ignorance, and suffering.

According to recent articles in the journals "Cell" and "Science", "...it has been shown in principle that adult stem cell lines can be manipulated to generate embryonic-like stem cell lines using a single-cell biopsy similar to that used in preimplantation genetic diagnosis that may allow stem cell creation without embryonic destruction. It is possible now to produce a stem cell from almost any other human cell instead of using embryos as needed previously." That's right, no destruction of embryonic tissue and no cloning. It is now possible to use existing cells from consenting adults to accomplish amazing cures and treatments, but our talented American scientists are falling behind in this vital field due to legal restrictions imposed by small-minded, fear-mongering politicians and religious movements who apparently would rather that science revert back to the dark ages.

It is time for the USA to get itself into the 21st century! VOTE OBAMA!

To Spell,

while I appreciate your observation for spelling and such. You must Realize that the author of this letter to the editor has to use a program called "dragon speak" to write on the computer as she does not have the ability to use her hands for typing. This program while offering accessibility can't put all words exactly into print as they are spoken. Please be more kind when replying. Thanks so much.

Yes Anna I intend to vote for Barack Obama. He is our only hope for change.
If we get McCain and his VP pick we will have four more years of the same and no stem cell research. Worse yet Palin is exactly like Bush or more entrenched in her self beliefs and religion. She has already said she will overturn Roe vs Wade if she can.

Anna

I have a very close friend who is like a big brother to me. Sometime back in the early 1980's he sustained a spinal cord injury and became quadripledgic just a day before he was suppose to go into the Coast Guard. There is not a day that does not go by that I do not think of him and what could be done for him I vote for neither of the major parties because all I have ever seen is Bickering and fighting amongst themselves like little children. I hope and pray that people will think out of the box this election and really send a message and vote for someone who is down the middle of line. I know most think I am dreaming, but I cannot see throwing my vote away for the GOP or the Dems because neither party will do what we want them to do. Just look at the last 100 years of both parties and see their track records. That is all of the proof that I need. I will be praying for you as well as my friend. There is always Hope!

Dear Anna, My mother had a spinal cord injury 59 years ago (she died, at 93, two years ago). As her daughter I know first hand the struggles you face. Thank you for stating so eloquently the real urgency of people who have lived your life. A vote for Obama would indeed advance hope for further stem cell research. We just can't look backwards another 4 years. My life experience will always make me vote for science. Best wishes to you.
