Musicians band together to benefit Oasis fire victims

REEDSPORT — Local musicians are coming together to help their own after a devastating fire put one of the oldest musical acts on the South Coast out of commission

The fire that leveled the Adrenaline Junkies bar, formerly known as the Oasis, in Winchester Bay two weeks ago cost more than just employees their jobs.

Members of the band Timberwolf, whose equipment was in the club at the time of the early morning blaze, lost the bulk of their musical equipment and are unable to fulfill several scheduled commitments that, for a couple of the members, is the only source of income they have.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to State Fire Marshal Bob Wright.

“There were portions of the structure that had collapsed and we couldn’t reach those areas,” said Wright.

Glenn Beatty, a member of the band Dammit Jim, another band that’s been performing for several years in and around the area, said he was brainstorming with one of his band mates, trying to think of some way to help.

“When I heard what had happened, I was devastated,” Beatty said. “These guys have been playing forever and besides being really talented, they’re nice people and didn’t deserve what happened.”

When word got out that there was a planned benefit, which also will feature the band, Blues Fusse, and other bands volunteered their time and talent to the cause.

“This is something that could have happened to any of us, but it just shows how tight the musicians in the community are,” Beatty said.

Timberwolf bassist Gaylord Hoggatt said he was humbled by the outpouring of generosity.

“I think it’s fabulous, but I’m too old and emotional for this,” he joked. “When you’re in a band and working, you tend to focus just on yourself and how you need to take care of business and sometimes it’s competitive. Then something like this happens and you really find out that we’re not competitors as much as we are family.”
