North Bend’s boys soccer team had its best match of the season, beating visiting South Umpqua  6-2 to open Far West League play.

Senior Sean Jany had his first career hat trick to lead the Bulldogs’ offensive outburst.

“He played a great game,” said North Bend coach Blaine Deming of Jany, who also had an assist.

Jeramy Dubisar added two goals and two assists, while Nathan Forderer had a goal and Chase Scott an assist.

Deming said the Bulldogs had a strong team effort.

“We’ve played together for a long time,” he said. “We just had to figure out a lineup that worked.”

North Bend used ball control Thursday.

“They were a pesky team,” he said of the Lancers. “They played really hard. We passed the ball really well.”

Connor Keith also had a strong match at goalkeeper, Deming said.

Timmy Wilson and Jake Goodson scored for the Lancers.

Bruins edge Pacific

The Brookings-Harbor boys soccer team came away with a 2-1 win at home over Pacific on Thursday in a matchup of the league’s top two teams last season.

Brookings-Harbor’s Kevin Sthen opened scoring when a corner kick was headed by a teammate, then he put his head on the ball for a goal.

Dylan Roberts scored the second goal for the Bruins, collecting a rebound off a shot and putting it in the back of the net.

Pacific’s goal came on a bouncing ball, when the Bruins’ keeper was blocked from the ball by a teammate. The name of the Pirates’ goal scorer was not available.

Brookings-Harbor coach Gabriel Anaya called the game a hard-fought defensive battle.

“There were a lot of middle-of-the-field fights,” he said. “Our defense was strong.”

Douglas ties Sutherlin

Sutherlin and Douglas played to a 3-3 tie Thursday.

Greg Mock had two goals and Jessie Pereze also scored for the Bulldogs, while Douglas got two goals from Jason Tingle and one from Sean Brenner.

Nonleague

Marshfield gets win

Marshfield beat visiting South Albany 1-0 Thursday night to improve to 2-2 on the season.

The Pirates were playing without two of their best players, Tyler Leach and Brian Melgar, but got their goal from Brayan Gonzales in the 45th minute on an assist by Angel Duarte and made it stand up with solid defense. Kyle Lyche had the shutout in goal for Marshfield.

“The defense played really well,” Preston said.

Adam Alexander, Forrest Rambo, Wes Keller, Alex Flaherty and the rest of the team played well, Preston said.

“Everybody hustled,” he said. “They wanted to win.

“This is a good confidence builder for us.”

The Pirates rebounded from a disappointing effort in a home loss to Grants Pass on Tuesday.

“It was nice to see a good team, and it made us hungry to win,” he said.

The Pirates host Phoenix in a nonleague match Saturday and travel to Thurston for the Midwestern League opener Monday.

Far West League

North Bend at South Umpqua

Victoria Jackson had a hat trick for South Umpqua as the Lancers topped visiting North Bend 6-1.

Victoria Jackson scored goals at 1 minute, 2:49 and 35:00 in the win. Her twin sister, Vannessa Jackson, assisted on one goal and Victoria Jackson returned the favor with an assist to Vannessa Jackson in the 22nd minute.

Victoria Jackson was also assisted on her 35th-minute goal by Lindsey Goodson on a corner kick.

Kristina Hale scored the Lancers’ fifth and final goal in the 48th minute, on an assist from Michelle Wright.

Nicole Medford scored the Bulldogs’ lone goal in the 65th minute, when she fired a shot from 18 yards out that partially deflected off a defender and went in.

South Umpqua coach Kami Wright said the game was a good opportunity to give some players some time on the field.

“I got to play my whole roster,” she said.

Bruins, Wildcats tie

Glide and visiting Brookings-Harbor played to a 1-1 draw on Thursday.

Ally Manley gave the Bruins the lead with a goal in the 55th minute. Glide goalie Shelbi Heidrick scored the equalizer in the 78th minute for the Wildcats.

UVC tops Devils

Cassie Lesch had a hat trick and Danni Buechley added two more goals as Umpqua Valley Christian beat visiting Coquille 6-0 Thursday night. Jorden Zerback also scored for the Monarchs.

Coquille coach Mark Usselman said the game was another learning experience for his young team.

“It was 90 degrees and the girls are not ready for 90-degree weather,” he said. “We were dead in the first half.”

But the Red Devils shut out UVC after halftime, with Joelle Wheeler playing strong in goal in the second half.

“That’s a good thing,” Ussleman said. “We’ve just got to keep working.”

Sutherlin edges Trojans

Sutherlin scored the only goal of the match on an own goal by Douglas in the fourth minute, beating the Trojans 1-0 on Thursday.

Sutherlin’s Megan Lemke sent the ball into play and the Trojans deflected it into their own net for the goal.
