Molly Hockema powered Gold Beach to a win over host Coquille on Thursday and a 2-0 start to the Sunset Conference volleyball season.
Hockema had 19 kills, five aces and two stuff blocks in the Panthers’ 25-16, 19-25, 25-16, 26-24 victory.
Rendall MacLaurie added 33 assists for Gold Beach, most of them to Hockema.
“Molly was their primary scoring go-to person,” said Coquille coach Troy Cooper. “In the tight games, they were able to go to her.”
Coquille, which lost its league opener at defending champion Cascade Christian on Tuesday, fell to 0-2 in league play.
“In Game 4, we had an opportunity, but they were able to catch up,” Cooper said. “We couldn’t close that game out.”
He added that the Panthers probably have their best team in recent years.
Lindsey Cooper had 30 digs for the Red Devils. Chelsy Forbes had 23 assists, while Allison Cook had two aces and two stuff blocks.
Braves win on road
Reedsport beat host Glide 25-12, 25-13, 25-14 in a Sunset Conference match Thursday to improve to 2-0 in league play.
Kim Church had five kills for the Braves, while Renee Roche had five aces and Eden Huebner had three kills and three blocks.
Alexa Skinner had three aces and seven assists and Allahna Hartwick had six blocks for the Wildcats.
Chieftains edge Myrtle Point
Myrtle Point stretched host Rogue River to the distance, but the Chieftains rallied for a 25-23, 19-25, 22-25, 25-23, 15-9 victory Thursday.
Ashley Williams had 11 service points to help Rogue River rally from an eight-point deficit in the fourth game. Sabrina Smith had 13 kills and nine blocks and McKenzie Cates had 12 digs and six aces.
Sam Sanders had 10 kills, 14 assists and 11 digs for the Bobcats. Courtney Love had 11 assists and nine service points.
Challengers top Bandon
Visiting Cascade Christian defeated Bandon in straight sets, 25-10, 25-14, 25-14, in a match Tigers coach Shani Pierce said was closer than the scores indicated.
“The scores sound like they blew us away, but the rallies were close,” she said. “It was good volleyball.”
Bandon was hampered by the loss of right hitter Kacy Crook to a twisted ankle in the match.
“It just threw off our rotation a bit,” said Pierce.
Crook should be back relatively soon, added Pierce.
Briana Valentine had eight kills and eight digs for the Tigers in the loss, while Grace Garrett added 13 digs, two blocks and two kills.
For Cascade Christian, Becca Sellers tallied 11 kills, five digs and two aces, Hannah Brewster added four digs and three aces while Rachelle Buck had seven digs and two aces.

Days Creek tops Powers
A strong Days Creek team topped Powers in straight sets at Powers on Thursday, winning 25-16, 25-15 and 25-14.
“Days Creek came out and played pretty solid volleyball,” said Powers coach Beth Rector. “They didn’t give anything up.”
The Cruisers struggled to serve and score at the net in the loss, said Rector.
“We had trouble finishing, and trouble serving consistently,” she said.
Middle blocker Liz Linderman had five kills for Powers, and setter Haley Patterson tallied 11 assists while Kristin Clauson added three kills.
Nonleague
Bulldogs beat Willamette
North Bend was only seriously challenged in one game Thursday at Willamette, and the Bulldogs withstood the second-game scare to win in straight sets 25-18, 25-23 and 25-14.
“We challenged ourselves mostly. We got out to our lead and then had a letdown,” said North Bend coach Les Willett. “We never trailed, but we need to get that killer instinct all the time.”
The first and third games were never really close.
Alexandra Mateski had eight kills and nine digs for North Bend, while Haley Dunham added seven kills, three blocks and three aces. Meanwhile Katie Banta had four kills, three aces and 22 assists and Jodi Smartt tallied six aces.
“She was just winging the ball,” Willett said of Smartt.
Willamette’s Natalie Baumgautner had six kills in the loss.
Vikings win again
Siuslaw beat visiting Cascade 25-22, 25-16, 20-25, 25-21 Thursday night to stay unbeaten on the season.
Shelbey McClellan had 12 kills and Seabree Church added nine for the Vikings, who improved to 3-0 in regular matches to go along with their victory at Reedsport’s tournament last weekend.
Tammy Flood had five aces, including four near the end of the deciding fourth game.
Setters Leigh Aurich and Maddy McClellan, sharing time while starter McKenzie Mumpower recovers from an injury, had another solid night, Siuslaw coach Amy Peterson said.
“They both have stepped up and done a really good job,” she said.
Siuslaw hosts its own tournament on Saturday with North Bend, Taft and Elmira coming to visit.
The Vikings had their best match of the season on Tuesday, a 25-20, 27-25, 19-25, 25-20 win at Tillamook.
Sutherlin tops Phoenix
Sutherlin dropped the opening game against visiting Phoenix, but came back strong to win the match in four games, 19-25, 25-9, 25-21 and 25-15.
“It took us a little while,” said Sutherlin coach Stacy Lefevre. “But (the team) really rallied well and came back.”
Amanda Hutchings had 11 kills, three blocks, nine digs and an ace for the Bulldogs in the win. Tess Knight added 13 digs and two blocks while leading the team in serves/receives. Danielle Holtz had 25 assists, 10 digs and two aces for Sutherlin.
