It’s a recycling center. It’s a Bed, Bath and Beyond.

No. It’s a new VA clinic.

The speculations are numerous, but the building going in at the corner of 12th Street and Marion Avenue at the Pony Village Mall won’t be for shoppers, but veterans.

The groundbreaking for the Veteran’s Affairs Roseburg Healthcare System’s new clinic at the Pony Village Mall behind Safeway is set for Friday.

Quite obviously, the ground already is broken.

On Aug. 28, workers started cutting away asphalt on the site. Since then the construction crew has been grading the site and driving piles into the ground, said Sharon Carlson, assistant to the VA director.

The ever increasing timbers, not steel, seem to grow out of the ground like a barren forest. They stand in rows and at various heights.

Civil engineer Mel Galli, with the Galli Group from Grants Pass, was on the work site Wednesday inspecting the piles. He said using timber, rather than steel is not unusual. Steel was one of the options available for the building, but the final design used timber, Galli said.  He wasn’t sure why the design called for timber, but it is less expensive.

Whether the combination is machine and steel, or pile driving machine and timber, driving the logs into the ground still is a noisy, grindy process.

A Knutson Towboat Company construction crew was driving piles on Wednesday afternoon. The crane fired up after lunch.

The crane operator let out a boom on the rumbling machine to pick up a log from the loaded truck parked next to the open gate on the work site. Crewmen hopped up on the truck and rigged a log to the crane. Lifting the boom and pulling up on the wire, the operator maneuvered the log to the ground, swinging it like a twig. Pile driver Ron Deronden measured and marked the log with orange spray paint. Forty-eight feet of Douglas fir.

Deronden signaled the operator to pull the log vertical. The operator  maneuvered the pile driver machine, also suspended from the crane, over the top of the pile. Working together the crane operator and Deronden slowly guided the pile into the right spot.

The machine shook and shimmied the pile into the ground. The force shook the ground. Then it stopped.

Deronden signaled to the operator to pull the pile out. Then he dug sand an rock out of the hole, and helped guide the log back into the right place. The rumble and shake started again and this time it was just right.

The tentative completion date is Feb. 24, 2009.

“After the groundbreaking things will really start going,” Carlson said.

The Roseburg VA announced in April its plans to close its Bandon clinic and build a bigger facility at the Pony Village Mall. It will be just shy of 10,000 square feet, about 4,000 square feet bigger than the Bandon clinic.

The new clinic will provide non-urgent primary care and mental health services to more than 2,000 veterans. Though bigger, the new clinic will keep the same amount of staff. Carlson said the goal was to provide better efficiency.

In a town hall meeting in July, Roseburg VA Director Susan Yeager said the VA wanted its South Coast facility closer to the veterans it serves. About 60 percent of the vets going to the Bandon clinic live in the Coos Bay-North Bend area.

Friday will mark the beginning of the VA making good on its intention of providing speedier, more accessible service.

“We are just really excited about the new clinic,” Carlson said.

And now the aliens have a new reference point to aim their lasers and death rays at. A bright new shiny building. How hard will it be for them to hit the LNG Terminal?

Nb res and others wrote on Sep 17, 2008 6:37 AM:

WOW YOU PEOPLE ARE SELFISH JERKS. Imagine these people who fought for our countries freedom and all you care about is stores you can shop at? or NB Res they can take a bus to Roseburg that is a long way to travel if say you have to have chemo or dialysis 3 times a week and you already feel like crap, you want to take a 1-2 hour bus ride? Also oh no it's in the mall for shame there are actually big towns thet put Dr.s offices, eyeglass stores that have a dr to do eye exams, in their malls but not a VA clinic cause you selfish small town people want a new BB&B wow way to treat our vets.I wish they would send all you negative people to Iraq so you could watch your friends die, get you leg blown off, or die yourselves then I can sit here and say hmm..take the bus to Roseburg I'm going to the mall

Please let me know where I am erring, but I have heard this clinic will not be fielding any dr. care. I have heard it will be referral only with very limited medical care. The Roseburg syndrome will continue.

Why do they have to travel so far when they are sick? Why cannot the government give them a medical card and let them go to a nearby clinic or hospital for service? My uncle when he is sick and hurting somehow has to drive to Roseburg.

If a vet doesn't get prior approval for an ambulance, the vets don't pay it. Once they are on vet coverage, they can NEVER get off, even if medicare would be better coverage.

We need reform for these people.

Former VA Employee wrote on Sep 16, 2008 1:01 PM:

I agree with you SAMUEL that the support staff is not perfect, but the veterans receiving these services could be a little nicer as well. You would not believe how rude some of these veterans are. It was the worst job I ever had in my life.

how stupid wrote on Sep 16, 2008 1:09 AM:

i think its silly to spend all this revenue on this when they had a nice clinic in bandon, and closed it. i think they should re-open the clinic in bandon.

citizen wrote on Sep 15, 2008 1:59 PM:

keep both open to help all the vets who served and got injured and creates more jobs for local economy.

NORTH BEND RESIDENT wrote on Sep 15, 2008 12:08 PM:

DAVE, They have the free van ride that takes you to Roseburg what more do you want.. They should have built it aruond medical facilities. What was the NB CITY COUNCIL thinking? I thought the mall was a shopping center, not a medical center..

Samuel wrote on Sep 14, 2008 5:47 PM:

I am pleased to hear that they are building this clinic in North Bend. I just hope that with the new building comes some new staff who want to serve the Vets. Some of the staff (I will not give names because they know who they are) had to go!!! The attitudes from some of the support staff was not customer service oriented and the condisending remarks about vets was way over the line.... I just hope that Roseburg VA Admin will be monitoring this clinic better and address the vets complaints when they have them....

wish i was in NB wrote on Sep 13, 2008 8:06 PM:

You guys crack me up. A story about a VA clinic, and you start to complain about not having a big box store and also the LNG fiasco.... You who complain about it, are those people I dislike having conversations with... Its always about you, and your agenda.

Congratulations for the Veterans. A VA clinic is well needed and a better location then Bandon, or having to drive all the way over to Roseburg.

Someone here mentioned about putting it up by the hospital... where? Last I remember, there are tons of houses up on that hill, and not much free land. Pony Village Mall lot is a good location, and plenty of parking!
At least the Veterans will be getting a nice facility in a nice town and in a good location.

wheels wrote on Sep 13, 2008 3:26 PM:

It's on the Loop Bus route, makes perfect sense in terms of location. Shop on the 'net for B.B. and B., our vets deserve more than crass materialism.

Resident II wrote on Sep 13, 2008 2:08 PM:

Do you remember why the VA clinic was originally located in Bandon? The clinic is to serve the entire country, and Bandon was considered a central location for all. I don't use the clinic; I'm just giving you some history.

Blue Eyes wrote on Sep 13, 2008 1:18 PM:

Bed, Bath, and Beyond? Are you people crazy? This new Vet facility is much more important than shopping. If you want big city shopping simply drive over to Eugene for a day.

Here We Go wrote on Sep 13, 2008 3:01 AM:

J.P. they won't give the job to anyone here. Someone from out of state will get the job and I think local union workers should get the jobs....

Roland wrote on Sep 12, 2008 9:11 PM:

Grossly out of place? At this point we simply ought to be thankful someone wants to take on some new construction in our town, especially near the mall. Nice for a change.

Theo wrote on Sep 12, 2008 9:08 PM:

By putting the clinic where it will be, it makes it easy for those who will use it. Grocery shopping, etc. Convenience for those who might not be able to get around real well, too.

Resident wrote on Sep 12, 2008 9:54 AM:

Don't get me wrong, I think this is a good thing for our vets, but I would rather have seen them build in another area closer to the other medical facilities. Having it right by the mall and behind Safeway seems like a very strange place to put it and it will look grossly out of place....and one could only hope that a store like Bed, Bath and Beyond would want to come to our area...other shopping choices would sure be nice, even our Macy's is starting to look sadder and sadder for choices for those of us who don't like Walmart!!!

Local Lady wrote on Sep 12, 2008 8:12 AM:

I would have been so excited to hear that it was a Bed, Bath & Beyond. I think it's just so odd that they are putting a medical clinic at a MALL. Hey so you can shop for new shoes and get your prostate checked all in one convenient trip!!! HA! Good idea-BAD location.

Dave wrote on Sep 12, 2008 7:43 AM:

I cant believe that people can be against a thing that helps our vets.By moving up here us old vets can save on gas ...what is wrong with the clinic being built close to where 80% of vets they serve live...I think it is great.

still waitin.... wrote on Sep 11, 2008 8:51 PM:

Personally, I would've sure liked the Bath Body and Beyond more.....sigh...someday....

Theo wrote on Sep 11, 2008 7:06 PM:

I think there are a few LNG articles that might be better to post this pure insanity to. I, for one, am glad to hear about the new VA clinic. Better than taking my dad all the way to Roseburg for his care.

Deb wrote on Sep 11, 2008 6:45 PM:

To our local vets who use this service, congrats! Yes, it has been a long time coming to our area. Nevermind the negative comment here. It is purely a case of tunnel vision. Just wish the vet center had been here when my husband got so sick and had to go to Roseburg for most care. Hey! better late than never. Our vets deserve the best!

j.p. wrote on Sep 11, 2008 6:19 PM:

I see pile driving but you don't mention who will preform the actual construction? I think this would be a prevailing wage job which local union workers could get some work

fubar wrote on Sep 11, 2008 6:19 PM:

i think a tsunami would be a good thing for north bend. it would probably take care of problems the city cant. timber for the v.a.? you think they have your veterans best interest in mind. was pony village built on wood pilings? with the v.a. it's not how it works, but how it looks. carlson only says what she's told to say.

Only a matter of time wrote on Sep 11, 2008 3:06 PM:

joditwo wrote on Sep 11, 2008 2:32 PM:

Look closely at that photo. Almost 100 pilings to support a small VA clinic that is not near the water. The entire Pony Village Mall is set on pilings. How many long 24 inch steel pilings will be needed to support the 84 million gallons of LNG planned for the North Spit? Anybody who has built a sandcastle on the beach knows that a 50 foot sand berm will never stop a tsunami surge. Pure insanity aimed directly at our North Bend community.
