High School Soccer: Pacific rallies for win over host Coquille

Pacific came back from a 3-1 halftime deficit to beat Coquille 4-3 in the Far West League boys soccer opener for the two schools.
Ryan Dannels recorded his second hat trick in two matches for Coquille, with goals in the 23rd, 27th and 35th minutes. German Ferrer and Blake Holmes assisted on the first two goals, while the third came on a direct kick.
Pacific picked up its offense in the second half.
Peter Swenson, who had Pacific’s first-half goal in the 11th minute on an assist by Thomas Oberbeck, assisted the Pirates’ first goal in the second half when Josh Valentine scored off Swenson’s corner kick in the 50th minute. Swenson added a goal in the 55th, off an assist by Jonathan Everest. Jarrid Doffing got the game-winner in the 56th minute, off a corner kick by Shane O’Brien.
Pacific coach Tom Swenson was pleased with his team’s play.
“Julian Carter really stepped up his play, communicated well from the back and had some great saves,” Swenson said of Pacific’s senior goalkeeper. “Thomas Oberbeck also stepped up and played well on the outside for us.”
Coquille coach Randy Lucas said his team was improved after a solid opening match —a loss to Umpqua Valley Christian last week.
“It was another good game played from my aspect,” he said. “We played the game plan that we put in. It worked to our advantage for most of the first half.
“The team is learning and (the players) are starting to see the fruits of their labor when playing tough teams.”
Bruins shut out Trojans
Brookings-Harbor shut out host Douglas 6-0 on Tuesday as Dylan Roberts had a hat trick.
Anthony Babb had two goals and Kevin Sthen had the other.
Class 3A-2A-1A District 3
Bulldogs top Panthers
Tyler Main had a hat trick for Creswell as the Bulldogs beat host Gold Beach 6-2 on Tuesday.
Creswell led 4-0 at halftime and improved to 2-0-0 in league play, while the Panthers fell to 0-1-1.
Nonleague
Cavemen beat Pirates
Grants Pass beat host Marshfield 5-1 on Tuesday.
The Cavemen had a 2-0 halftime lead. Brian Melgar scored Marshfield’s goal.
“The score wasn’t indicative of how we played,” said Marshfield coach Tony Preston. “I’d rather see it today than down the road.”
Marshfield is in the middle of a brutal schedule of six matches in 12 days before starting league play next Monday at Thurston.
The Pirates host South Albany on Thursday in an OSAAendowment game and Phoenix on Saturday.
Preston was pleased with his team’s hustle and the general play of the defense.
“Forrest (Rambo) and Wes (Keller) had great games,” he said.
“We need to work on developing a positive first touch. We’re playing together and our heart’s there. We need to put it together the closer we get to league.”

Far West League
Monarchs top Bulldogs
The North Bend girls soccer team lost a tough 5-0 match to visiting Umpqua Valley Christian under the lights Tuesday night.
“We played well for 40 minutes,” said Bulldog coach Dustin Hood, noting that in the opening 20 minutes and the middle 20 minutes of the second half his team was strong. “Unfortunately, you have to play well for 80 minutes.”
UVC forward Danni Buechley broke away in the first half on a defensive mishap to score the first goal. Cassie Lesch and Shannon Morhin added first-half goals for UVC, while Buechley and Hannah Hawkins scored in the second half.
“We had a couple of chances we couldn’t finish,” Hood said.
Hood was happy with his defense, despite the final count. In particular, Amilia Liggett had a strong game at sweeper, he said.
“I think we’ll bounce back,” Hood added. “You have to learn how to lose to learn how to win. (The players) have a lot of character. I appreciate that.”

Brookings-Harbor opened defense of its league title by allowing just two shots in a 3-0 win over visiting Douglas on Tuesday.
Ashley Juarez assisted Miriam Hernandez on the first goal, in the 38th minute. Hernandez and Kayla Hamm added second-half goals.
Wildcats win
Glide beat visiting Coquille 8-0 in a matchup of two young teams.
Shelby Heidrick had five goals and an assist for Glide. Andrea Weber, Brenna Stinson and Jamiee Fuller also scored.
Both teams were playing their first matches after being hit hard by graduation last spring — each returns just three starters.
“I start six freshmen,” said Glide coach Dana Croll. “But I have some very talented freshmen. It’s going to be fun in the next few years.”
Coquille, meanwhile, has a roster that includes mostly players who are in their first year of soccer.
“It will come,” coach Mark Usselman said. “It’s just a matter of time.”
