Volleyball: Reedsport opens Sunset season with win at home over newcomer

Reedsport beat Sunset Conference newcomer Rogue River, 25-22, 25-15, 25-21 in the volleyball league opener on Tuesday at Reedsport.

Kim Church had five aces and seven kills for the Braves. Shelby Wiggans had 11 digs and setters Chelsea Hitchcock and Caitlyn Riley each had nine assists.

“At times they played really well,” said Reedsport coach James Hixenbaugh, adding that his team is determined to return to the playoffs this fall. “They played hard. Their willingness to win is huge right now.”

Sabrina Smith had four kills and four blocks for the Chieftains, who joined the league this year when they dropped down from Class 4A.

Bobcats tip Tigers

Myrtle Point outlasted visiting Bandon, rallying from a 2-1 deficit for a 25-23, 20-25, 23-25, 25-22, 15-5 victory on Tuesday.

Myrtle Point coach Kami Hixson was pleased with the way her team responded after losing the third game.

“My girls played to win,” said Kami Hixson. “They wanted to win. The crowd got into it, and I think that helped.

“Bandon’s a good team.”

Sam Sanders had 18 assists, seven kills, four blocks, five digs and five service points for the Bobcats. Erin Fullerton had eight kills and nine blocks, Amanda Sturgill had seven kills, and Erika Leibelt had six aces and 15 service points.

Briana Valentine had 15 kills and eight digs to lead the Tigers. Grace Garrett had 12 kills and 10 digs and Karli Crook had eight kills and five digs.

Panthers win

Gold Beach swept visiting Glide 25-10, 25-17, 25-23 in the Sunset Conference opener between the schools Tuesday.

Molly Hockema had 18 kills, three aces and four blocks to lead the Panthers. Katherine Zuber had seven aces, two kills and a block; while setter Rendall MacLaurie had 23 assists and an ace. Lily Miller added five kills and an ace.

Jessica Strader and Kristy Russel combined for six kills and four blocks for the Wildcats. Lindsey Mann had 18 digs.

Challengers beat Devils

Cascade Christian began defense of its league title with a 25-15, 25-16, 25-13 win over visiting Coquille on Tuesday at Medford.

Becca Sellers had 14 kills and five aces, Breanna Holtz added 24 assists and Hannah Brewster recorded 10 digs for the Challengers.

Kelsey Hill had six digs and Chelsy Forbes had eight assists for the Red Devils.

Skyline League

Hornets tip Pirates

Camas Valley beat visiting Pacific, 25-10, 23-25, 25-11, 25-11 on Tuesday.

“Overall, the girls played better,” said Pacific coach Tiffany Freitag, whose team fell to 0-2 in league play.

“That second game, they played exactly how I would wish them to ever play. We took a big step in the right direction, and now I’m looking for them to put things together.”

Jesse Culley had 10 kills and a block to lead Pacific’s offensive attack. Setter Devon Ashdown added 12 assists, two blocks, two kills and an ace. Ashley Curry, Cassie Keeler and Heather Valentine had three aces each for the Pirates, while Keeler had three kills and Curry two. Jordan White added two aces.

Nonleague

Warriors edge Bruins

Del Norte beat host Brookings-Harbor, 20-25, 21-25, 25-16, 25-14, 15-10 in a nonleague match Tuesday.

Dani Olson had 13 kills and four blocks for the Bruins. Taylor Keys added eight kills and four blocks. Danielle Ambrose had 14 assists.

Brookings-Harbor coach Lori Cooper said the Bruins are showing improvement, but still have work to do.

“I have a lot of young kids out there,” she said.

The Far West League season does not begin until next Thursday.
