Let the pranks begin. The Marshfield’s Class of 2009 jokesters got a jump start on the senior pranks for the year.

At about 5:30 am, Marshfield High School teacher, Debbie Larsen, arrived to work to find as many as 100 stacked tires blocking the front entrance doors of Marshfield High, a Coos Bay police press release said.

It is unknown at this time who was involved in stacking the tires in front of the entrance doors of the Coos Bay campus. The culprits left a big hint for police, however.  The words “SENIORS 2009” were written on the tires.

get your facts straight wrote on Sep 20, 2008 6:16 PM:

You people should check your facts before commenting! The kids that were caught performing the senior prank were given a 60 minute detention. Nobody was removed from any game or position because of the prank. You should know that the kids DID NOT HAVE PERMISSION TO TAKE THE TIRES. So they are very lucky not to have been prosecuted. The athletes and president were punished for another incident off campus, that involved illegal drinking. Completely different situations. Mulkey did what he had to do - follow the code of conduct which all of those kids and parents signed. If these kids want to behave like this they need to pay the consequences when they are caught!

I feel for the maintenance and custodial staff who have to clean up the mess, but it's kind of a funny senior prank. I like seeing that kind of thought going into a clever prank. They could have just broke stuff like too many other kids. I think if the culprits were caught they should only have to do some sort of community/school service that fits the crime such as cleaning up the mess, etc. As for Mulkey, I've known him for a long time. He's paid his price for whatever he did and now it's time for you all to back off. He is fair and has been the driving force behind stricter academic and behavioral standards for student athletes. What more do you want?
Sounds like a lot of personal vendettas and people who don't understand the real situation at Marshfield High School, or have a tainted perception.

This is tame wrote on Sep 15, 2008 3:42 PM:

For our senior prank we took apart the assistant principle VW and got it on the roof piece by piece and re-assembled it.

No one got caught but they did take donations to pay for the car to be taken back apart and re-assembled, everyone chipped in. And there were no exceptions, it was chip in or expelled.

Was worth it.

Also, I think my older brother in the 90's and his friends made a mixture of gasoline and roundup and sprayed their graduating year in the front lawn of the school and the grass died off and SENIORS was left in dead brown grass. That seems worse than tires. Now...if they had lit the tires on fire that'd be a whole different story...

class of wrote on Sep 15, 2008 2:13 PM:

I'm pretty sure I remember my class putting tires on the goal posts at NBHS with a big sheet saying MHS 2004. None of us got in trouble. I also remember a bunch of our star football & basketball players getting caught at a party and they were only suspended by Mulkey from 2 games. It's funny how these kids pulled a harmless prank and were suspended from games and taken out of office. That is so ridiculous - and overkill. It's just Mulkey trying to set an example by these kids.

ive been there wrote on Sep 15, 2008 12:27 PM:

Roblan talked out of both sides of his face, and still does. Inskeep lies and is unfaithful to his wife. Great role models to have in charge.

Gradof wrote on Sep 13, 2008 8:19 AM:

Ok good job seniors of '09. I don't remember my class doing anything, and as far as mulkey goes he's unfair. I dont think the kids should be punished that hard. It's harmless fun! But even when i was there they were strict. They need to bring Mr.Robland, and Mr.Inskeep back. Those two kept that school together.

whatever wrote on Sep 12, 2008 4:52 PM:

The suspensions were not for this incident...it was for a busted drinking party.

From MHS Class of wrote on Sep 12, 2008 4:24 PM:

I seem to remember a VW Bug or two that made thier way upon the front steps of MHS. No one was punished for it. It was expected of the Seniors. Good, clean fun is all it was.

Are We Aright wrote on Sep 12, 2008 11:26 AM:

WOW Yes it does cost the school money and yes it was a pretty good prank. But seriously, every school has their pranksters, always have always will. I think the school district needs to come up with I guess guidelines? Who knows but I have say it was pretty original, got to give them that! And no one or nothing got hurt or vandalized. My only worry is the class of 2011. Should be a good one!

old school wrote on Sep 12, 2008 11:11 AM:

Not sure who is picking on "Deb" Larsen, she is a class act and all she did was report it. Did notice she was at the school at 5:30 for crying out loud.

I am no fan of Mulkeys but give it a rest. He got caught, paid a fine AND got his name drug through the mud - seems like he paid for his actions.

I don't know if the punishment fits the crime or not for these kids but, their are always consequences for ones actions. Pranks are fun and cute, just like seniour skip day but, they still have consequences. IN this instance a message was sent to this senior class and others - think about what you are going to do.

If the police department is involved in this matter, the union guys must have toooooo much time on their hands.

Time for layoffs.

Aaron Johnson wrote on Sep 12, 2008 2:49 AM:

As a former MHS student, I must say, way to buck the system! In all seriousness though, I really do NOT think it was necessary to remove Andy Rossback from his position of MHS President. I don't think you will find another young person in this community who is as "in touch" with his peers as Andy. Way to go, Travis Howard strikes again! I find it interesting to see a man with his credentials in an administrative position. I agree with Mr. Mulkey's treatment of athletes. Greg Mulkey is an EXTREMELY fair man and it's just common sense that kid's who are involved in league sports need to represent MHS in the most positive manner. Somebody needs to tell me why Greg Mulkey isn't the principal of MHS. He's what the school needs to progress.......

Maggie wrote on Sep 12, 2008 2:20 AM:

But you have to wonder if it was Marshfield Seniors 2009. It could have been North Bend H.S. seniors.. Hoping to get them Marshfield Seniors in trouble... Just a thought... Perfect way to get back at them and sabotage them.. Think I have seen something that on MTV High School Pranks.

Once a Pirate... wrote on Sep 11, 2008 10:44 PM:

What a ridiculous double standard that has been set here! I realize what Mulkey did was actually a pretty common occurrence, but it was totally ILLEGAL, and he did get caught- but he doesn't have to pay the price. Mulkey should have been the one to clean up the mess - BY HIMSELF- that would at least be a start for the restitution he owes society. Seniors, good joke! Mulkey is a joke.

OMG wrote on Sep 11, 2008 10:22 PM:

These Senior pranks are a tradition going back to 1987 when I was at MHS (probably earlier). No one was hurt...have a sense of humor. Many of the staff and employees have children that have been a part of a prank. We are way to serious these days, lighten up. Debbie Larsen should be use to it by now...were your boys part of some senior "funny business" when they were in school. They should not be kicked off the team for a game or be removed from office. We ALL do things like this when we were young. LAUGH AND HAVE FUN.

Anonymous wrote on Sep 11, 2008 9:17 PM:

I really think that most of you need to get your facts straight before you jump to conclusions as to what happened. I also believe you are mixing two different issues in your comments, so please think before you accuse.
Also, the tires were a better idea than graffiti all over the grounds that the class of 2007 had done. Thanks class of 2009=)

What damage wrote on Sep 11, 2008 2:26 PM:

Here's what I think....the rule should be if it does any damage then they need to be held accountable..if not then they should have left the tires...let everyone get a good laugh and then have the pranksters clean up the mess! That way the underclassman might think twice about what they decide to do. Rules need to be consistent and most important...make sense!

MHS GRADUATE wrote on Sep 11, 2008 2:01 PM:

Some people need to lighten up. The prank was all in good fun and it did no permanent damage to anything. I dont think that it is right the the athletic director should have punished the athletes the way he did. After all he is the one who likes to poach deer. All he got was a slap on the hand. I say Keep the pranks coming as long as they dont harm anyone.

Mr.Favorite wrote on Sep 11, 2008 12:14 PM:

Hmmm "confused" I agree with you totally. It is funny how the athletic director suspended athletes and permnently banned the asb president.
Hmmm favoritism anyone?

Cos Bay Resident wrote on Sep 11, 2008 10:38 AM:

Since these "few" kids want to play pranks the Marshfeild Staff should do one of their own... I SAY THE STAFF AT MARSHFEILD SHOULD CANCEL AND FORFEIT THE NEXT FRIDAY NIGHT HOME FOOTBALL GAME.

whatever wrote on Sep 10, 2008 8:00 PM:

As a school district employee who knows people who work tirelessly as custodians and maintenence, I don't like this. The workers who probably cleaned this up are working really hard anyway, for pretty low pay considering their work load. This wasn't necessary. A prank is really great when the people who commit it can clean it up afterwards. It was thoughtless, albeit clever. Take some responsibility.

Linda wrote on Sep 10, 2008 4:14 PM:

To TLS, yes isn't it funny how some can getaway with it. Just like I said well I won't repeat myself.

Why so serious wrote on Sep 10, 2008 3:03 PM:

Not bad seniors, keep 'em comin'!

Confused wrote on Sep 10, 2008 3:01 PM:

I think its kind of funny how serious the school authorities took this minor offense.I mean these tires were not stolen, the mess was cleaned up in a short matter of time, I see no harm no foul. Instead 6+ student athelets have been suspended from this weeks games and our ASB president was removed from office. I think that is way to harsh of a punishment. Seniors keep it coming, give them something to really complain about.
Much Love,

Seriously wrote on Sep 10, 2008 2:41 PM:

Class of.. R U kidding me a crime??? They stole JUNK TIRES from an UNLOCKED facility that has to pay to have them removed!!! They didn't hurt anything, they just gave the good ol' district matenience boys somthing to do for a few hours - they need to earn their keep somehow!

Wondering how this works wrote on Sep 10, 2008 1:01 PM:

Quite interesting of how last year the Athletic Director who is now Dean of Students/Athletic Director still kept his job after poaching a deer.......How is that fair that he gets to keep his job but a student gets kicked off the soccer team for a prank?

Kris wrote on Sep 10, 2008 12:53 PM:

This great! Good clean fun for kids!

Class of wrote on Sep 10, 2008 12:25 PM:

These so-called "pranksters" have committed a crime. They should be treated just like any other criminals in Coos county. They should be arrested, booked, and released.

That'll teach them rascals!

just saying wrote on Sep 10, 2008 7:55 AM:

If they had the energy to lug all those tires up that hill, they should be doing community service at the dump!!

Nice job class of 2009. Keep the jokes coming.

TLS wrote on Sep 9, 2008 7:10 PM:

I think the High school should not get all worked up over senior pranks. its part of being a senior. . freshman look forward to being a senior to do them. if no harm is done, there should be no problem. . too bad MHS is so up tight to let their students have a little fun. . i think its wrong to kick kids of athletic team for being a normal teenager, especially when the deans son was involved with them as well, when he was a senior.. . its funny how certain people get away with things.

That's actually pretty funny I have to admit. Sure it's a bit of a mess to clean up but would you rather they actually vandalize stuff??? Good job keeping it managable class of '09.

The class of 2010 will be much more clever and creative than any graduating class in MHS history.

The seniors may have cost the school district a lot of money to have the tires removed but in the end, at least their prank wasn't harmful and kind of funny. Okay, it was hilarious and very original. Good job class of 2009!
