Siuslaw beat Yoncalla for the championship in the annual Reedsport Invitational volleyball tournament on Saturday.
The Vikings and Eagles both had advanced to the final with three-set wins in the semifinals. Siuslaw edged North Douglas 23-25, 25-12, 25-12. Yoncalla beat host Reedsport 26-24, 13-25, 25-19.
The tournament also included Bandon, Toledo, Glide and Oakland.
Reedsport won its pool in the tournament, sweeping Oakland and Glide and splitting two games with North Douglas.
Siuslaw split with both Toledo and Yoncalla, but advanced because Yoncalla swept Toledo. Bandon won one of its two games with the Eagles.
Roseburg Invitational
Springfield edged Marshfield by the slimmest of margins to take the consolation title at the Roseburg Invitational on Saturday.
The Millers won 24-26, 25-23, 17-15 over the Pirates, who were missing three players because of injuries.
Springfield beat North Bend in the consolation semifinals.
Marshfield finished third in its morning pool, losing to Class 6A schools South Eugene and Sprague, and beating Class 5A Crater.
In the consolation bracket, the Pirates beat Grants Pass 25-13, 25-23 and South Medford 26-24, 25-14.
“We started off slow in the morning, but then I thought we improved as the day went on,” said Marshfield coach Tammie Montiel. “With only nine players, we ran out of some steam by the end of the day. It was a good experience for the girls and we got a lot of volleyball in.”
Jessica Hockema had 34 kills and nine blocks during the day. Kara Young had 32 kills, 45 digs and nine aces; Natalie Caffey had 21 kills, 11 aces and eight blocks; Brittney Young had 70 digs; and Katelyn Richmond had 84 assists.
North Bend also finished third in its pool, beating Roseburg’s junior varsity team, splitting with Grants Pass and losing to North Medford.
The Bulldogs beat Crater 20-25, 25-15, 15-5 in the consolation quarterfinals, before falling to Springfield — after only a five-minute break — 20-25, 25-21, 15-12.
“I was pleased that we competed well against most of the competition,” North Bend coach Les Willett said. “I felt we were in every set and match. We struggled a little bit with our serving, but played very good defense at times. I think it was a good early season tournament to help us get ready for league.”
Alexandra Mateski led the Bulldogs with 36 kills, 22 digs and four blocks during the day. Haley Dunham had 14 kills, nine digs, four blocks and four aces; Katie Banta had eight kills, 14 digs, five blocks and 60 assists; Blair Davis had nine kills, including five against North Medford, and 11 blocks; Ashley Horlacher had 58 digs; and Camille Deming was the team’s top server.
North Bend hosts Marshfield in the annual Civil War match on Tuesday.
CROSS COUNTRY
Vikings sweep
Siuslaw swept the team titles in the annual Road, Lake and Dune cross country meet at Winchester Bay on Saturday.
Siuslaw’s boys dominated, with six of the first eight finishers, scoring 20 points to easily beat runner-up Woodburn (79) and third-place South Umpqua (82).
South Umpqua’s D.J. Flores was first across the line, covering the challenging 5,000-meter course that includes a long stretch on the sand dunes in 18 minutes and 24 seconds. He was followed by Siuslaw runners Joe Campbell, Jacob Berkner, Brad Finnell, Brad Greenburg and Jesse Wells.
Siuslaw’s girls also had 20 points, beating runner-up Oakridge by 22.
Clarita Twombley finished first for the Vikings in 22:04, and was followed three seconds later by teammate Raelyn Robinson. Pacific’s Wren Carter was third, with Siuslaw’s Linda Par fourth.
Lindsey Wright finished eighth for host Reedsport.
Ben Creek Invitational
Sophomores Ally Manley of Brookings-Harbor and Sydney Snook of Gold Beach put up scorching times while taking the top two spots in the Ben Creek Invitational at Gold Beach on Saturday.
Manley covered the 5,000-meter course in 18:19, the same time as boys winner Gage Northrup, while Snook was timed in 18:41. Myrtle Point’s Maegan Miranda was a distant third in 20:46.
Northrup, of Brookings-Harbor, was followed in the boys race by Jon Werder of Gold Beach and David Dill of Myrtle Point.
Brookings-Harbor had the only complete girls team, while Myrtle Point had the only complete boys team.
While there were only 26 runners in the high school races, the middle school event had a total of 96 runners. Results of those races, won by Connor Devereux of Sunset and Clara Herbage of Riley Creek, will be included in the Community Sports section of Saturday’s edition of The World.
BOYS SOCCER
Summit tips Pirates

Sean Hood scored in the 15th minute for the Pirates, assisted by Angel Duarte. Brian Melgar added the first of his two goals in the 19th minute, assisted by Brian Gonzales.
Summit tied the score by halftime and took the lead with three goals in the first 28 minutes of the second half. Melgar scored an unassisted goal in the 70th minute.
The game was a rematch of a playoff game won by Summit last fall.
