Maritime artist Christiaan “Dutch” Mostert of North Bend will be honored by the University of Oregon College of Education Alumni Association for his volunteer work on behalf of local children.

The ceremony will be held at  7 p.m. Tuesday at the Bay Starlight Concert Series at Mingus Park in Coos Bay, a press release said.

For the past 10 years, Mostert has developed hands-on art education that simultaneously provides children an opportunity to participate in fundraising for schools.

“Dutch has made an indelible mark on our children, providing them with inspiring art activities and helping them find a way to support art education,” said Cap Sharples, retired school counselor and member of the college association’s Board of Directors.

Mostert visits local schools and paints a watercolor painting on the spot. Students learn about primary and secondary colors and how to use them when creating a transparent watercolor. Mostert then refines the painting in his studio and subsequently donates the painting to the school auction. The paintings have brought in significant funds for the schools’ art education programs.

The College of Education Alumni Association Awards Program honors people throughout the state of Oregon who have made valuable impact on their local schools and communities in ways that improve the lives of children and families.

Mostert received his art education from the Los Angeles Art Institute and has traveled extensively, participating in artist networks and workshops. He specializes in maritime art utilizing transparent watercolors, oils, graphic sketching and acrylic. A nationally recognized artist, he has won the Mystic Maritime Museum Award in Connecticut and is recorded in the Smithsonian Institute as a maritime artist of the Century. He was nominated to the Board of the National Association of Artists and a member of the American Society of Marine Artists.
