North Valley ended Gold Beach’s 15-game winning streak by stopping a two-point conversion attempt with 24 seconds to go Friday night, beating the host Panthers 13-12.
Travis Moore scored for Gold Beach on a 2-yard run, but officials ruled quarterback Jeffrey Knox was stopped before crossing the goal line on the two-point conversion run.
Gold Beach coach Kevin Swift said the loss could prove beneficial for the Panthers.
“I think good’s going to come out of this,” he said. “My kids have not been playing with a chip on their shoulder, and I guess they have one now.”
He added that the Panthers haven’t had the humility or motivation they need to get back to the level of last year’s state champions.
“Hopefully, now this will ground us and give us the motivation and desire that’s been lacking,” Swift said.
North Valley scored a defensive touchdown on a Gold Beach fumble in the first quarter and added two field goals by kicker Trevor Woodruff — the latter at the halftime buzzer.
Knox returned the kickoff 86 yards for a score after Woodruff’s first field goal in the opening quarter.
“It was a defensive battle,” Swift said. “We’re not playing well offensively. North Valley had something to do with that as well.”
The Knights held Moore to 50 yards on 16 carries, while Knox had 77 yards on 18 carries for Gold Beach.
The Class 3A Panthers played their second straight game against a larger school in 4A North Valley, having beaten 5A Crook County in an endowment game last week.
“At least I feel good that we’re playing up,” Swift said, adding, “It’s better to lose this time of year than the end.”
Bobcats win on road
Kyle Davis had four touchdown passes and Myrtle Point improved to 2-0 with a 33-26 win at South Umpqua on Friday night.
After South Umpqua scored on a touchdown pass from Ryan Smedley to Triton Crane, Myrtle Point got scoring passes of 61 yards from Davis to Willy Looney and 29 yards from Davis to James Brown.
Crane pulled the Lancers within 14-13 with a touchdown run, but the Bobcats had three straight scores — a 13-yard pass to Looney, a 70-yard pass to Sean Andy and a 1-yard run by Scott Clark.
Smedley had two late touchdown passes to make the final score close.
Braves win
Jason Fegles threw two touchdown passes and Reedsport beat host Oakland 36-21 on Friday night.
Fegles, thrust into the varsity role after starter Adam Chase was injured last week, connected on 5 of 7 throws for 123 yards, with one interception.
He had a 15-yard scoring pass to Cory Christoffersen and an 11-yard TD hook-up with Sean Horton.
Jon Thurber, Josh Palmer and John Covey added scoring runs for the Braves.
The game was tied at 14 in the second quarter before Palmer’s touchdown run. Reedsport went up 36-14 before Lucas Flint returned the final kickoff 78 yards for the Oakers.
Bulldogs top Devils
Zach Mailard scored three touchdowns and Creswell shut out visiting Coquille 32-0 Friday night.
Mailard had two touchdown runs in the fourth quarter and a touchdown reception in the third.
Skyline League
Cruisers fall in opener
Days Creek outscored host Powers 60-44 in the Skyline League opener for both teams.
Bronson Owens had four touchdown runs, including two of at least 50 yards, for the Wolves, finishing with 166 yards on 12 carries. Brandon Lane had two touchdown runs and a 70-yard kickoff return.
Powers battled back from an early 30-6 deficit to make the final score respectable.
“We came out very tight,” said Powers coach Nick Gonzales. “We’d have one person missing one defensive assignment and they’d capitalize on that.”
Powers has a young team, and Gonzales was pleased with how the players responded.
“The kids did a great job in the last three quarters of battling back,” he said. “Days Creek is a great team with a lot of talent.
“All through the game, you could see the (young players) improving and getting better.”
Kyle Blanton had two rushing touchdowns and three touchdown passes to George Lewis. Lewis also had a scoring run for the Cruisers.
Blanton finished 7-for-18 passing for 81 yards, with the three scores, and also had 11 tackles on defense.
Far West League
Siuslaw falls
La Salle beat visiting Siuslaw 35-14 Friday night.
Details of the game, Siuslaw’s season opener, were not available.
Mustangs beat Bruins
Todd Woodrum scored three touchdowns and Hidden Valley shut out host Brookings-Harbor 41-0, spoiling the Bruins’ season opener.
The Mustangs limited the Bruins to just 110 yards of offense and took advantage of the favorable wind on a breezy night to score 28 points in the second quarter and 13 in the third — both with the wind at their back.
BOYS SOCCER
Phoenix wins battle of Pirates
Pacific fell to visiting Phoenix 1-0 in a hard-fought soccer match on Friday, the season opener for the coastal Pirates.
“Phoenix is a good team, really solid,” said Pacific coach Tom Swenson. “We were able to hold them to one goal.”
Francisco Torres beat Pacific goalie Julian Carter one-on-one in the 53rd minute for the only goal of the match.
Pacific, with a relatively young team, had a strong game, Swenson said.
“Pacific played OK for the point we’re at,” he said. “We’re learning as we go.”
Swenson praised the leadership of Carter and follow senior Jarrid Doffing in the losing effort.
